OHSU ABSN 2013 Applicants

U.S.A. Oregon

I didn't see a thread.....although it is quite early yet for some to be thinking about the upcoming application session. I am a senior at Marylhurst/PCC, will be graduating Spring 2013 and applying to OHSU, Duke, and John Hopkins this Fall.

Anyone current students that have advice? Anyone who just applied have any tips for the application? Anyone else applying?

Good Luck to those taking Summer courses!

Overall GPA is a big factor. I was told before submitting my application that the average GPA of people accepted last year was 3.8 and the lowest was 3.6. That number I was quoted includes all college level classes, not just the prerequisites. I wonder if they had a cutoff point for GPAs below a certain level. *This last part is just speculation*

i have no healthcare experience either.. for me, i honestly think it was my GPA. i knew it'd be a long shot but since they take cumulative GPA for ALL college classes taken instead of just pre-req GPA, i knew mine would be lower. i have a 3.9 in pre-reqs but with my previous BA added in there, i think my cumulative GPA was lowered to about 3.4 or 3.5.

I applied to the ABSN program. Got an email yesterday saying I didn’t make it to the next round also.

Would be interesting to see what I lacked? If GPA or essay..etc.

After the selection process is complete, they have said you can call and they may be able to tell you why your application was denied.

It wasn't my GPA - I have a 3.85 overall. They asked for a resume - which includes a lot of copyright law experience, but nothing in healthcare. Since that seems to be a requirement even for the consortium, that is my guess. I felt that I had a good series of essays, too.

That's strange they asked for your résumé since their admission page said they don't accept it. Did you apply to the ABSN only or ABSN-MSN program?

I haven't received any notification yet. I also have no healthcare experience besides volunteering at a hospital. My overall GPA is around 3.3-3.4, with a prereq GPA of 4.0. I'm hoping they are looking past that and at my essay/other experience!

I have not heard anything back myself-- look forward to hearing back from OHSU about the ABSN program (they said they typically e-mail and call those they are accepting before things arrive via post) and PCC about the essay portion of their application. I am also now applying to Hopkins ABSN-MSN program with paid clinical residency, since they extended the application deadline.

I am sorry to those that are hearing back about not being accepted, and hope that you find another program this year. It is good to hear that responses are being sent out, though, allowing others time to figure out plans and change things if needed.

Good Luck to everyone-- I hate waiting :(

Yes, sorry. I applied for both programs - rejected for both. I have no experience with unserved populations, either. I am not sure why that should be a requirement for being a nurse, though. I would just like to know how I compare to those who got accepted.

I received an email inviting me to the OHSU Monmouth Campus for an interview. I am excited beyond belief! Any advice for the interview? It said it's scheduled to last 2 hours. Anyone know if it is a 1 on 1 interview or a group interview?

Thank you!

Also,

I applied for the BSN program- not the accelerated..

I'm really sorry to hear that you received bad news. I got rejected from UPENN earlier this year, it stung for a bit, but I believe that things happen for a reason. That said, I hope you will get into a program that truly recognizes your talents!

If you don't mind me asking, how did you learn that experience with underserved populations was a requirement for admission? Also, what program is this a requirement for? Thanks for all your help!

I didn't receive a rejection email-- I wonder if that means the rest of us will either be accepted or waitlisted.

I've already accepted a seat in a different program so- unless there's a big fat scholarship involved- I'll likely give up my spot at OHSU if it's offered.
