Ohio RN nurse applying to California. Denied. Help?

Published

I've been a pediatric OR nurse in Columbus, Ohio for 8 years. The first 4 years I worked as a staff nurse. I was later promoted to specialty leader (I oversee all ophthalmology, oculoplastics, and neuro ophthalmology operations), which is the position I've held for the last 4 years. My boyfriend and I are now applying for jobs in California (He is an acute care NP). We've both applied for our CA license (CA BON says processing times are 10-14 weeks currently, which is typical). In the meantime, we've been applying for jobs. My applications have been denied from both Rady Children's in San Diego and UCSF Benioff. Neither job requires BSN (I am a BS, ADN nurse working on BSN). I meet all other requirements.

Does anyone have information or experience that could provide some insight? I don't know why I was denied other than perhaps the fact that my CA license is pending.

Thanks in advance to anyone with advice.

Competition is fierce. They may not state BSN preferred but they can certainly choose to interview only those with a BSN. I'm sure the lack of CA license also influences the decision. Both together would require something compelling that no other applicant would have.

Maybe do a few travel gigs to get your foot in the door. I've traveled all over CA for the last 5 years and never had a problem getting any contract. I did adult ICU both Cardiac and Surgical. I also have all the certs and alphabet soup. I know several people who start as travelers then convert to staff. It's a fairly common practice. SD not the most lucrative city for travelers but contracts are available. Best of luck!!

Not having a CA license is key. They know it takes months and they do deny licemsure on a semi regular basis. I work as a traveler in CA too and have no shortage of contracts...

Have you spoken to HR at either facility or at the very least the RN recruiter?
