I am a level 2 Med/Surg student that had 89.4 average in Fundamentals last semester and I started Med/Surg this semester. I was told it was tough and that it was unlike anything that I have ever done before and everyone struggles with this semester, yadda, yadda, yadda! Well we took our first of 2 exams and our class average is a 65.8 I am stunned I have never earned a D before and I worked my butt off. It has me realing and questioning my ability to be a nurse. Did anyone else go through this? I only know one girl in my class that got a 76 which is passing in our program I know there has to be more then her but, Gees I studied, I know my values for lab and I know osmolality etc...
I will pull myself up by my bootstraps and get over it but, i am still just stunned.
Thanks for letting me cry

Hang in there. Is it the NCLEX style questions you have trouble with? That's what got me all through school. I started using NCLEX study books such as Saunders and did questions related to the content we were studying...I think it helped.
Keep you head up and keep going. Good Luck to you!!!!!
I used to NCLEX books Saunders and Lippencot, I used our Perry and Potter study guides and our med/surg text study guide and I thought I had the material. When I got the test the questions were odd and didn't seem like it was using critical thinking as much as recallling wierd statictics and side effects of syndroms and situations. I studied the major side effects but they used teensy minute details to derail us. OH WELL
Thanks for the encouragement.

First of all don't panic. You have to stay calm. In my experiece it is usually the style of the questions, not the content that gets people. You have to take these tests a very specific way. If you break the questions down the right way most times you can get to the right answer, even if they throw in minute details to try to throw you off track I would be more than happy to help you if you like. Just send me a private message here and I will give you my number. I have helped several of my classmates and they are doing much better.

Try to stay clam, I found that when you get used to the way the questions are written you will do better remember your abc's when answering questions. They are preparing you for Nclex.

I feel your pain. Believe me you know more than those test scores show. Just remember it is only two test... things will clear up in the end.
Thanks for all of the well wishes. When all the dust settled 90% of our class ended up failing and the lowest possible grade we can get and pass is a 76% and only one person received that grade the other students scored 63-66% so that is very consistent. Well the professors and the dean were really upset and said that this was obviously a teaching issue and have decided to allow us to re-take the test after the instructors go over the critical info again. The only drawback it we have to re-study and we have to agree to go in to class on our own time for the review....again that is only a minor thing. I would give hours to a new lecture if it could help my grade.
Thanks for the offers of help, right now I am understanding the question and perform well with the books. I will give it a little more time and then I may be PM'ing you asking/begging for help. We only have 2 tests this semester and that is why this is so devastating. If we do have the opportunity to re-take that will, hopefully, be the difference in passing and failing our whole class save one girl. Attrition has already killed 30% of our starting class.

I got a C on my first Med-Surg test. You have to really find key words and phrases as well as critically think in order to understand what the question is asking you. NCLEX practice workbooks also help. After I applied these principles I ended up getting an A in all my Med-Surg classes. Good luck to you!
