I accepted a Head Nurse position on an alzheimers unit, I start tomorrow and I have had no orientation to the unit but I've worked with some of the staff else where,a few are insubordinate and one makes sarcastic remarks about me to my face , of the racist slurr kind.
I dont know why I accepted this job, except that I have mouths to feed at home, but before I walk thru the valley of the shadow of death does anyone have advise that I can arm myself with?
Thank you

When people are nasty, it often isn't anything to do with you. Likely they are angry about something else. I think I'd try to find ways to let them voice their issues AND take steps to improve things in a way that makes them happier. I do think that folks should be respectful at work, and that slurs of any kind should not be tolerated. It's not professional at all. Good luck!

Document, document, document. Then, call 'em on the carpet on the issues that are bothering you. There are rules/regs in place at all facilities for dealing with most any workplace issue. If you have the muscle to rid your staff of the toxic waste from these obvious troublemakers, then do so and then hire folks who ARE willing to work without giving so much lip and being so downright insubordinate! YOU have the right as their leader to either make 'em walk that straight line, or look at being unemployed. If it's documented properly, a certain number of times, verbally counseled, then they're OUT, if they do not comply. Use your goodness to improve the unit.

Fire them all and start anew. Tell the head CEO that you had an Alzheimers moment...only kidding!
