how often do you change your pitocin once you mix it.

we mix 10 units in 500cc of LR and have various conflicting info on how long it is good for. some say 4 hours others say 12 or 24 hours.

what do you all think?

and do you know where i could find such info at?

I change the bag/tubing out if it is still there after about 24 hours or so. infection chances perhaps? I just feel this is best. Rarely, does pit last all that long around where I work anynow.

24 hours....

or, when I wonder if the nurse hanging the bag ever put pitocin in it!!!!

(you know the multip on 32 mU of pit, still smiling, no contractions>>>)

rofl haze, VERY good point. you rock.

i have been changing it out every 12 hours or if it did not seem to be working, need to make sure the pit is in the bag ya know

Our protocol is every 24 hours, for infection control. But, I also change it out if it doesn't seem to be doing anything. (Although, I'd hate to change a bag when it's on 32 mU of pit, and suddenly jump-start the pt. from nothing into full gear hard labor! LOL!)

we use syringes with 10 units to 50cc, good for 24 hrs from time of mix.

At our hospital we use 15u/250cc Normal Saline. It tends not to last very long but policy states that we change it out in 24 hours...but most of us would change it out long before then if it seemed not to be working.
