Officially a CRNA! Ask me anything!

Published

I remember around this time 3 years ago, I had just finished my first week of CRNA school. Time has FLOWN by!  I really wanted to make a post for anyone applying for CRNA school or preparing for SEE/boards, and answer any questions. Firstly, for anyone applying, I failed nursing school the first time around making a D in pharmacology, C in health assessment, and C in Pathophysiology. Flash forward to a year later, retook pharm and got an A and moving forward I made A's and B's and ended up with a nursing GPA of 3.2 and overall 3.5. Worked my butt off for the next few years to get certifications and experience and applied to CRNA school 2.5 years later and got accepted.  It may be harder getting accepted with the low grades that I had, but it also showed that failure doesn't stop me.  And just wanted to say that it is possible to get accepted with a lower GPA, but it is definitely more difficult.

I had a hard time with the didactic portion of CRNA school, but with good study habits and determination it was enough. Never once failed a class. The program I was in required a benchmark of a 440 on the SEE exam to graduate. I ended up having to take the SEE exam 4 times to make that benchmark. It is said that the more you have to take that exam, the less likely you are to pass boards on the first attempt. But I went in to my board exam knowing I did everything I could to prepare and I did pass on my first attempt. Something about the NCE that I feel like could've influenced me not passing, is losing confidence after 100 questions.  If your exam keeps going after 100, that means you're still in the game to pass.  Don't let that get into your head!

If anyone has any questions on how to prepare for SEE/NCE, don't hesitate to ask! I had to put in some WORK, but it just goes to show that hard work does pay off. Whether you're just applying, going through didactic, or studying for SEE/NCE, YOU GOT THIS!

Yeah we did a hybrid type thing!  We had classes Monday - Thursday and clinical every other day and an all day clinical day every week. But they made changes to that since we graduated.  And it would alternate. One week clinical was M W F and the next week it was Tu Thurs. classes were Monday - Thursday starting at 1 pm so if we had class and clinical it would be clinical 6:30 - 11 am then class 1-6 pm. Our classes ended in the fifth semester so we were front loaded. Semesters 6-9 were straight clinical and board review!

Again, I really appreciate your responses. I just have a few final questions that I rarely find the right people to ask:

Should I take chemistry, physics, and pharmacology classes after I receive my BSN to build up my GPA and knowledge base in preparation for CRNA school/interview? Would it be worth it to become an ACNP first before CRNA school to have a backup plan and more pharmacological/physiological knowledge going into school? How can I keep a valid record of my shadowing experience that the UTK Nurse Anesthesia admissions board would accept?

My personal opinion would be get experience in an ICU first. Figure out what schools you really want to attend, and get in contact with them early. I didn't take any grad classes before I applied. And I was going to if I didn't get in or if they told me I should to strengthen my application. The year I applied was supposed to be a learning year but I luckily got in. And you can do ACNP if that is what you want to do, but if CRNA is your true passion, id stick to that path. Again, just my opinion. Someone may tell you different. I know someone who was a pediatric NP and a flight nurse but didn't even get an interview at a school. I was shocked but, what schools really want is that recent full time ICU experience usually. And for a record of shadowing experience, I honestly wouldn't have the slightest clue? You maybe could ask the CRNA youre paired with to send you an email stating your name and that you shadowed for this many hours? I never had to keep a record of that ?

Congratulations on your accomplishments.

Thank you so much!

Hello again. I have returned with more questions if that is alright as I have entered the last semester of nursing school. At UTK, did you have to travel for any of your clinicals. I have done a rotation at LeBonheur children's hospital in Memphis. That happens to be a site for UTK. Are they flexible with keeping clinicals closer to where you live? I will be living in Knoxville soon and would find it very challenging to travel to Memphis. I assume it is just for pediatric anesthesia clinicals. So is that just one semester? Or is it less than a semester?

Im sorry, I actually went to MTSA in Nashville!

Hey! Congratulations! I am starting my nursing career and am increasingly interested in becoming a CRNA. I definitely want to find certifications and additions to improve my resume. Do you think graduate certificates in pharmacology and/or advanced physiology (with a cardiac focus) would help? Do you think one would be more helpful than the other? Thanks :)

Hey Shanneliz,

Congratulations! It's good of you to post this thread. Question for you--when did you start looking for post-grad jobs? Are you waiting until after passing boards or did you line something up a few months before graduating? And what do you think about some of these places that approach students during the program with job offers? Better to take it or wait?

Thanks,

- iso

I took a job even a year before I graduated! Some even pay you a stipend until you graduate. I'd really research and make sure it is a position you would like. If you interview, talk to the CRNAs. Ask them a lot of questions that you think you'd want in a work environment. Even if you don't take the job, it doesn't hurt to interview and start seeing what's out there! But, it's all about how you feel! It's totally up to you and either option, before graduating or after you take boards. Whatever is right for you!

Hi! It's so nice that you created a thread like this. I'm in the application process and it's so stressful. I'm applying to a school that opens its application mid-July and is a rolling admission process. I went to the open house yesterday and they basically said to have your app in in the first week to have the best chance.

My question is, for references, it says we can submit our application without waiting for our references to submit their referrals. Is this normal? It almost sounds like they aren't expecting all references to be in within a week. I'm just making sure that people do this and it isn't making my app look less complete/competitive by not having all referrals in before submission. Waiting seems like a bad idea... IDK I just need guidance on this.

Thank you so much
