Ocean County College OCC Nursing Waiting List

Published

Anyone know from experience how long the waiting list is to get accepted into the evening program once you had completed all the pre-reqs?

Specializes in Hospice, ER.

At this point it's about 2 years. You may get into the one day a week program in 1 year.

It took me a year and half, I applied to the night time and One day/online and got into both.

OCC has a new director now, and she is really nice. She has changed it so that there are day and night classes every semester. If you complete your pre-req's, you should be in the next full semester. Your completion date will be the last day of the semester for your A&P2 class. Along with everyone else who took it that semester. That herd of people are then filed by the first semester they went to OCC, not how many letters of intent you have signed, which is what people used to think. For once, it paid for me to be older than most students, since I did 2 summer semesters when I was a student at Drexel 10 years ago. I was 2nd in my herd, as another lady had a start date of 1979. I had a May completion, and got my letter maybe 3-4 weeks ago. I had called the day before registration, and was told I was about 30 people down the list, and that there was a good chance I could get a letter, because with it being a heavy female major, females lives change more drastically then mens, they get divorced-cant do it, get married, cant do it, get pregnant, have a baby, you name it. So, to say its about 2 years from when you FINISH pre-req's isn't accurate. I got in on the 2nd refill of tentative addmissions.

A word of warning---it is EXPENSIVE. Start saving now. Another major factor if people having to decline is the last minute rush. Here is a list of what needs to be done:

full physical from dr. I got my letter around last week of Nov, and it had to be done by Oct 15th, anything older was not accepted. This includes urinalysis, blood work and 2step mantoux test. this costs varies depending on your insurance.

Pass the TEAS test---You need a 40% I got an 81% and I just went through the threads here, copied what people said were on there tests, and I saw just about every question on my own test. This costs $30 and they only do the testing on Wed and Friday I think.

Cash deposit to hold your seat. $200.

Uniforms: Have to go to WB uniforms in Lakewood, they fit you and require one full set, which is $122, I am going to add a 2nd set, just in case. You can say you want it on your Financial Aid, if you get that, or take student loans.

BackGround Check. This varies. I think the base is $60, and then $20 for each address in other states. I moved to SC, and owned 3 houses there, so my bill was $129 bucks after taxes and junk.

Basic Life Support CPR certification. Mine expires in March, but I have to renew it now, so it is good the entire 2 years of the course. That is $55 through the AHA.

I think I am forgetting something.

Either way, it is expensive just to get in!! Start a piggy bank now, and best of luck to you!

"Full physical from dr. I got my letter around last week of Nov, and it had to be done by Oct 15th, anything older was not accepted."

What do you mean by that? You got your acceptance letter into the Nursing Program in November and you couldn't have a physical any older than October 15th? Sorry the wording is just a little confusing for me. I just finished all my pre-req's for the program this past semester (Fall 2009) so I am hoping to get in for the Fall 2010 program. I haven't had a physical in years, should I get one now or wait until I see if I get accepted??

Great advice about the cost of getting in, I had no idea it was that much! Thanks for the heads up. I can't remember if I filled out a letter of intent when I registered for my Fall 2009 semester, and I know I didn't do one yet when I registered for Spring 2010, I have to go back and sign one. Will that make me lose my chance of getting in for Fall 2010? I just started at OCC last summer so I am not used to having to do that and the people in the office certainly don't remind you.

Just adding to what mercuryrawks said ...I am also starting this semester and it is expensive...

They were not accepting any physicals that were done before 10/15....So if I were you I would wait until you get your acceptance letter before you get your physical.

Also you must get the Hep B vaccination (and your first shot of the series must be completed along with your physical, etc.)

I would say to fill out that letter of intent ASAP if you have not already. The one day a week program has a shorter wait if that is an option for you..

GOOD LUCK!!

So if you are lucky, it is possible to get the evening classes, but clinicals right now are only being scheduled during the day and only on weekdays? So no evening or weekend clinicals?

They say that clinicals CAN be any day of the week, including weekends, but it looks like they are all weekdays this semester. 7-4. But I only looked at nursing 1. The onsite/online classes have 7am-7pm clinicals as SOCH. I think SOCH handles all of the OSOL. And when they are assigned, there is NO switching. So, thankfully my husband has a very flexible job, and now works weekends, and has off on Monday and Thursday to cover me. We just have to rush on Wednesdays.

What I meant was, I got my letter in Nov. The letter stated if you have JUST gotten a physical, as long as it was not completed BEFORE Oct 15th, you could use THAT physical, but if it was done on Oct 14th, you had to get an entirely NEW one done. So, I would wait until I got my acceptance letter to do it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the clarification. I'll definitely wait until I get my acceptance letter til I get my physical. I got a letter in the mail yesterday stating a bunch of changes they've made to the program. Seems like they modify it every semester. They said clinicals are available 7am-7pm Monday-Sunday and now they don't have specific evening and morning programs, just spring and fall and when you get accepted you determine which one you want since they offer both morning and evening classes now each semester. I would say that's definitely an improvement on the program. They changed the rules around about the TEAS test too. I am a little worried for that. How was it??

I know people say "buy a study guide!" but I never did. I went to the "pre-nursing student" board on here. They have a sticky for the TEAS. I went through one of those threads, and c&p what people said they had on their test. I studied from that. Just about every question I studied for was on there. It is pretty basic stuff. But, it is set up to let your nerves get the best of you. I caught myself trying to just guess and go, but when I stopped and forced myself to actually READ it and figure out what was DEF wrong, I ended up realizing I knew the answer. I got a 94%. You only need a 40%. there was one girl who took it with us that did fail. Hit up sites like chem4kids.com and the group of them linked from that site. just to brush up on basics. Again, this site was the biggest asset.

Overall, it is no big deal.

Good luck!

They said in the letter I got yesterday that they changed the version they're using to Version 5, which apparently is the newest version of the test. I'm wondering how different it will be compared to the one you took. Hopefully not too bad. Is it kind of like the SATs? I took those. If I get accepted for this coming fall, I only have until April to take it. Hopefully I'll find out by the end of next month if I'm accepted.

Thanks for all the advice!

Wait, what? why would you only have until April to take it for September? We had until January 4th or 6th, I forget, to pass it. For the semester that starts on Jan 25th. I just took mine on Dec 18th.

I can not believe they are sending you all of this information, when you haven't even gotten a provisional acceptance, and I am starting on Monday, and they have a TON of stuff they haven't gotten to us yet.

I guess the new Dean is trying to do right by the in coming classes, and start fresh, but I hope my class is not forgotten about. ARGH!

Either way, that sticky on pre nursing students doesn't give yo the answers, it gives you insight to the KINDS of questions. No one can tell you what exactly your test will be. The big thing about nursings chool is changing how you think, and how you are tested. The TEAS is just the easy intro to that. Going over the TYPES of questions they use is WAY more useful then the actual questions.

now I am annoyed! hahaha
