OCCC Spring 2014 Applicants

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Published

I have been checking this board consistently over the past couple of weeks hoping that someone would have started a thread for this spring's admission, but haven't found one yet! Are we slacking, or am I the only one here?!

Anyways, I turned in my application last Friday with 18 points and was curious to see where everyone else stands.

I can't believe its finally here! I made it in! Congrats to you all too, can't wait to meet everyone.

So exciting! Let's try to get everything done that we can so we will not be stressing at the last minute. I'm glad they didn't make us wait 2-3 more weeks.

I just now checked my email!! I'm in!!! I was NOT expecting it today!! So happy!! Congrats ladies!!

Any suggestions for the CPR class? Let us know when/ where everyone is going to be taking it, maybe most of us can get in the same class!

Has anyone started their TB testing? Apparently Tubersol is on a national backorder and I couldn't find a clinic that has any available to perform the skin test. I called and spoke to the Health Professions Division and was told that it is acceptable to get the QuantiFeron Gold blood test done as an alternative. Also, that getting the blood test, we only need to get the one test done, as opposed to the 2 skin tests the welcome packet required. Anyone hear anything similar? I did go to the OCCHD TB control center to get the blood work done. I just wanted to know if I was the only other person in this boat?

I have not started my TB testing. I did it last year, but I know I have to do it again. Thank you for the information. I already took CPR, that's why I didn't reply about that.

I had my first one done this week through Norman Regional. I am scheduled to have my second one done next week. Also, for the CPR course, I also checked with NRH and they offer the course that we need for only 45 bucks! They do only offer them during the week so my husband will need to take the day off so I can go. I would love to get in the same class with come you gals! I was looking through my information packet and realized that I will be out of the country for orientation!!!! I have already called and made other arrangements, but seriously! It figures our family vacation would fall right when I need to be home:banghead: Maybe a group of us could meet up to grab coffee or something so I can at least know a few faces on the first day! Is this something that you guys might be interested in?

@MeganOKC...Who did you talk to that gave you that information? I called to check on dates and was told that we needed 2? Now I am confused?!?!

@mommylx3 I called and spoke with ****. She gave me a list of a couple places to try calling, and when I called and they didn't have the skin test available, she told me I could do the blood test as an alternative. This all happened Monday Sept 30.

Also, I called the Recreation Dept at OCCC. They offer the CPR for health professions course there as well, for $45. The next class is Sat Oct 12 from 8:30am- 2:30pm. They will have one more on November 2nd

@mommylx3 -Also, she was talking about the blood test as only needing one, not the skin test (which would still require 2 negative tests). Not sure if that was confusing in my other post or not?

Ok. So, we can take the blood test. I have scheduled with Norman Regional for tomorrow, but will have to reschedule. It's only $10 for the skin test at Norman Regional. What is the cost for the blood test? The OK County Health Department gave me a list and I only found one other place to complete the TB skin testing and the cost was $25. Also, I have to get the blood Varicella titer since I had the disease and never received a vaccination.. Norman Regional offered the test for $35. Is anyone else going to have to do this?

I am going to enroll on the Nov 2 CPR class (I only get paid 1x/mth). So, I hope to see one of you all there. If not, I'm def opening to meeting everyone.

One last question, does everyone have a plan for paying for school? I already have my bachelors and I am a little unsure of what to expect.

I had to have the varicella titer done too. I had norman do it last week when I had my first tb done. I wonder why they didn't give us the option of doing the blood test in our information packets? I would have done that since I was having blood drawn anyways. Oh well. I think I might be doing my CPR through NRH since Saturdays are filled with my kids activities. I still cannot believe that I am actually starting nursing school!! Seems like I have been working towards this point for so long!!

As far as paying for school, I am still waiting to see if my financial aid is going to come through. I already have an Associates in Pre Education and was working on my Bachelors when I swithced to nursing. I have had to fill out different forms and stuff to see if I can still receive loans/grants. If not, my mom has offered to help out with the costs. I do know they do payment plans since I have been using them to finish my pre-reqs.

@meganokc...I must have just miss understood what I was reading. I am glad you were able to do the blood test. Sounds like much less of a hassle:-)

The blood test I had done was $80! So it's a good thing I only need to get it done once! I was adopted when I was 10, so I cannot find any of my health/ shot records from before that time! I cannot remember if I have ever had varicella either! So I opted to have my MMR and varicella vaccines done again. I went to the Health Dept. and received my first round today, and since it is a requirement for school there was no cost. (I figured it would be easier, and much cheaper to just get re-vaccinated in the long run). I generally wouldn't mind just paying for the titer, but since I can't even remember if I had the chicken pox as a kid, I was afraid I would have to pay to get the vaccine anyways if it didn't come back positive. And there are PLENTY of additional costs adding up besides that, so I'm going to save where I can!

As for paying for school, I generally get enough financial aid to help with most of the tuition, if not, I would have no clue how I would be able to even attend!

Has anyone checked out uniform costs? I know they attached a list of costs, but I was wondering if any of the uniform shops here would have the required pieces at a better cost (Like the Uniform Shop at the Outlet mall?) Also, has anyone purchased their stethoscope yet? With all these costs, I have a feeling I'll be asking for some of this! Haha, it'll be worth it though!
