Where are all the OB nurses????????

Hey rumor, I work in a regional midwestern hospital and our epidural rate is nearly non-existant. We have perfected techniques for getting moms thru labor quite nicely. My favorite is L & D but would love the opportunity for a job in a NICU near the Twin Cities, MN.

Do you know what type of schooling/degree I'd need to work in the NEWBORN NURSERY.I'd like to get my LPN.

I've wanted to be a nurse since I was 7years old,but I'm really wanting to get into OB nursing. :)

I'm also a postpartum nurse I've been on my job for a year and LOVE it!! I work night shift so that I can be home with my girls during the daytime. Laura

I love this idea, but when do you sleep? I would like to be able to do the same thing when I finish nursing school.

Hi! I've been an OB/GYN nurse now for 12 years (it is so much easier than saying post patum/gyn/nursery/mother/baby/labor&delivery) and I have to say my true forte is post partum. I'm also a traveler. It's nice to find this place on the net.

What are the reasons you love postpartum?

As far as education for any OB/newborn-related nursing job, including nursery, you would do best to go for your RN degree. Many (if not the vast majority) of units hire only RNs for PP, newborn and L/D nursing.

You sure do know alot about OB nursing! I have been reading posts on here and I have really enjoyed reading your responses. I am learning so much from others posts and experiences.

I have a BS in Behavioral Science and I am applying for an RN program next year. I have two children. I guess the OB bug bit me after having my daughter. I thought it was just "baby euphoria" so I didn't make any quick decisions. I then had my son and it was still there. I loved my pregnancies, hospital experiences, and breastfeeding. I am currently a social work supervisor and I do love my job but I am ready for a career change. I think I have OB nursing in my blood. I have a LONG way to go since I haven't even been accepted into nursing school yet. I am taking the steps to apply. I have all of the classes required for the program with the exception of the nursing classes and Microbiology. I am applying for a delayed progression program so I will be going at night and doing clinicals at night or on the weekends. It will take me a bit longer but I can continue to work full time and hopefully pay my way through without taking out loans. I won't be able to enter the program until May of 2008 if I am accepted. I am so excited/nervous. I am 33 years old so I have been out of school for a while now.

I have been hearing different things about OB nursing in my area. The hospital websites are posting jobs for L&D and Mother/Baby requiring 1-5 yrs experience depending on the hospital. I must say that was very discouraging initially. I have since posted on the local boards on here though and had replies saying that one of the hospitals hire new graduates (the one that has 5 yrs experience required) so that gives me hope. Of course I don't expect to walk into the exact job that I want but I would prefer to go right into OB nursing if possible. I would love to start in the Postpartum unit of the teaching hospital we have here. I have read that is a good place to start and then to work your way into L&D. I also thought I would talk to my advisors and see if they could set up an internship on the Mother/Baby Unit after I get through my OB rotation. Do you think this is a good idea? Even if it was only one night per week I would think that would at least get my foot in the door. I would also love to do an internship at an OB office. I absolutely LOVE my OB and respect her as a doctor. Do you think that she would be willing to have me come and learn from her nurses if the college set it up? Or would that be too weird since she is my doctor? I know that is a different setting but I think I could learn about the GYN side also and see what it is like to work in an office environment. I have so many things running through my head. I am probably WAY ahead of myself but I am the kind of person who likes to have information and know what I am up against. This is probably a very overwhelming post! Lots of questions since this is new and exciting to me.
