OB Nurses--info on 'PUPPS'

Published

I was hoping someone could help me out. I had a postpartum pt during clinical who had a dx of 'pregnancy rash'. I have did enough investigating to determine the name is 'PUPPS'...but I can't find any more info. I really need some add'l info on this. If anyone has heard of it,or can direct me to any websites with that info, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for your help!!

Do a search for pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy. This condition is quite common, so, you should find information without too much difficulty.

You should be able to get a lot of info just doing a google search. I had PUPPPs myself for 3 weeks and was actually then induced 2 weeks early because it was so horrible. We tried oral steroids and such but nothing helped. The only way to actually get rid of it, not just control it, is to deliver. It tends to happen more in first pregnancies and when the mother is carrying a male baby (which were both true for me). Hopefully I'm not one of the rare cases that has it again in future pregnancies!! I believe it's normally located on the chest and upper arm area...mine was from my cheeks down to my ankles. It started on my stomach and looked like hives. I would wake up bleeding because I was scratching so hard in my sleep. I ended up having an emergency c-section, and by the time I left recovery and went to my room (about an hour) the rash was almost completely gone!! I had a rough pregnancy to begin with but that rash was the absolute WORST!!!!
