AWHONN Introduction to Fetal Heart Monitoring Online Course beneficial??

  1. Hello everyone!

I am a new grad who just passed NCLEX in June and recieved my IL license in the mail 2 weeks ago. Woo Hoo! I went into nursing because I love it and have always wanted to work in the OB area. I'm finding that applying for any OB job in the Chicagoland area is quite the feat. All seem to want 3 years experience. I really don't want to give up on this and just start applying to med-surg jobs, because my heart won't be fully in it and I am all about good patient care and wouldn't want my lack of "passion" for this area to jeopardize their care in any way. I'm looking for ways to boost my resume up and have been looking at the AWHONN Introduction to Fetal Heart Monitoring Online Course. Has anyone here taken this? Would it be beneficial to me? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

I was in your same boat. I ended up getting a med-surg job, and took the course. It was very informative and it showed my boss now that I was determined to become an L and D nurse even though I was working med-surg. Showing that I took my own time, money, etc while working a different specialty stood out to her.

It certainly can't hurt and if it's what you're interested in, you'd probably enjoy it to boot!
    Go for it!

I would highly recommend it. As a manager, I suggest this to anyoine who is coming in as a newbie, or to anyone looking to get into OB. It is actually a requirement for any new hire of mine without OB experience. So why the heck not do it. I would interpret that as a "good thing" if you came to me in an interview It is a nice basic course and will give you a nice understanding of fetal monitoring.

    Good luck

Thanks everyone! I will definitely look into doing this then! Is it something that is gonna take a few days or weeks of online work to complete or is it one of those courses that could potentially be completed in an 8 hour session at a computer? Just wondering so that I know how much time to set aside next week.

My unit requires it every few years. You might also look at getting NRP, STABLE, PALs, etc. My unit requires NRP and I took STABLE just for extra education. I haven't taken PALs, but its another class you could do. Unfortunately, sometimes your job will pay for these courses, but if you had them already, it might help you find a job.
