I am looking into applying for the NYU ABSN Fall 2016 program. I was wondering if anyone had any helpful tips and thoughts on what I should know when applying for the program.
hey! i couldn't figure out how to direct message, but I'm going to be at nyu absn in the fall! I'm so excited:) I was wondering how the schedules are different in the second semester? Also, my clinical is at langone and I heard that this means the whole 4 semesters ill stay there.. is this true? Thanks! Hope to see you in the fall:)
Hey FutureNurse4,My pleasure! You actually don't get to make your schedule, it's made for you, which I guess can be a good thing, because there isn't a crazy competition to get the good teachers/classes or off campus hospitals.
You'll be taking four main classes- Health Assessment and Promotion (HAP), Pathophysiology, Adult and Elder I, and Professional Nursing. HAP has a lab component that you have once a week, and lasts about three hours.
With Adult and Elder - you'll have a clinical component that will alternate between an on campus simulation lab thats 5hrs long - mine is 2-7pm on Thursdays, and an off campus clinical at a hospital thats 8hrs long - mine is 7am-3pm on Thursdays as well. It differs depending on whatever schedule they make for you, so the day/time may be different, but always the same amount of hours.
For the lectures, they only meet once a week, so be prepared for 3hr classes lol- mine usually start at 8am, on Mondays I have a HAP lab right after lecture so it's 8-2, Adult and elder lecture is 11-2 and Fridays we have Pathophysiology and Professional Nursing back to back, so it's 8-3.
It seems like a lot of free time in the schedule, but you need every second of free time you have to do work and study lol.
In terms of professors, they're all great. One teacher may be great for you, while being super confusing for another. But all classes are recorded, so I know people will podcast the lecture from the other professor teaching the course if you find you don't like your professor.
Studying tips - don't cram the night before. I used to be a habitual crammer and still did well, but here it's a different story - some classes like pathophysiology are so detailed, that there's no way you could remember all that you need to do well, studying the night before. I'd also ask older students for old study guides they may have made (if any of you come -i'll help you out :) ) they save you a lot of time!
They also give you a lot of little projects or assignments - so just make sure you're organized and on top of all the due dates, because there are a lot of little projects/assignments and it's easy to let something slip.
- my one piece of advice - I personally, came from a university that wasn't big on using computers for everything - here, NYU Classes is your life and a lot of the learning you do is from online modules, your exams are on the computer etc. So, for the first week or two, you'll feel beyond stressed and confused trying to familiarize yourself with the way things are done here, and just adjusting to nursing school in general. Just remember, everyone is in the same boat as you, everyone feels overwhelmed together, so don't be hard on yourself if you feel like you're the only one lost- you're not, trust me lol.
Sorry if it's super detailed, but i figured y'all want the most info you can get - i know i did!

Hey Heather!
Sorry I'm just responding now we started midterms so it got really busy. Congrats on getting in!
So i'm not sure what the rule is about Langone, I've heard people say 3 semesters but they tell us that they place everyone randomly so I don't know if there's a pattern to it. Like I got placed in Maimonides two times now, some people in my clinical last semester were also placed there again, and some weren't. So not sure about the Langone q - but if it is true thats great! Langone is down the block- Maimonides is in Brooklyn lol.
The difference between 1st and 2nd semester schedules - First, you'll be taking a 6 week rotation course 2nd semester's is Psychiatry. (3rd is Pediatrics and Maternity) Half the class takes it the first 6 weeks of the semester and the other half, the last 6 weeks. This means, that you'll have a Psych Off campus clinical once a week for 3 weeks, and on campus clinical for 3 weeks. While at the same time still going to your Adult and Elder II on and off campus clinical's. So for 6 weeks it's two clinical days, but after that it goes down to just AE clinical's (yay!) - Im the 1st 6 weeks for psych - it's busy, but it's manageable so don't worry!
Also another nice thing is you don't have mandatory open sim slots to complete like you do 1st semester, they're optional if you want to practice.
Hope this helped some, let me know if you have anymore questions. See you in the fall! :)
