Hello!
I am in the process of trying to go back for my BSN for nursing. I already have a bachelor's degree in sociology but had a change of heart and want to be a RN. The last two years of My undergraduate year was the worse moments of my life. My grades fell really bad due to me trying not to be homeless.. i worked two full time jobs and I did make sure to graduate in 2015 but my gpa is low .. like 2.70
i am wondering if taking community college classes for my prerequisites and doing really well like all A’s maybe a B if it happens..to help get my GPA up and show i am really serious about my career and I’m focused. My top schools i am interested in is hunter(i was accepted there for undergrad) , molloy , Lehman , pace university. If anyone has any advice for me that be awesome! And any recommendations on nursing programs in NYC ( I am new to the city from California ). But overall I am very smart and hard working and i really want to achieve this career and be a great nurse. Thanks for the help everyone!

Get a high pre-req GPA, especially science GPA.
And get high TEAS and or HESI score.
Thank you! Do i take the TEAS OR HESI on my own and show i took this or once in accepted hopefully to a program ?

Every program has a different requirement.
Some require the TEAS other the HESI.
You should take it before you apply. I know a few California schools, not sure about NY, that sends you an invite to take the test on their campus.

Lehman only looks for the GPA for the prerequisites in the science courses. You need to be a current student in order to apply for the generic/accelerate nursing program.
I also started on Hunter. I did a few prerequisites there, then I transferred to Lehman (it's really easy btw CUNY schools).
I just got accepted into Lehman Accelerate program. Class starts on June 3rd.

Hi @Misstayler : I would focus on your prereqs like your life depends on it. Every A you get will offset your undergrad GPA. Do everything..I mean everything to get an A in A&P 1 + A&P 2. Seek out a tutor if you need the extra help (Chem, Organic Chem..A's are very important too) A Nurse mentor drilled this in my head 2 years ago as I started my prereqs for ABSN programs. It really got under my skin but I couldn't thank her enough for it.
Schools here in NYC often work off of a ranking system. They take the highest (science) Prereq GPA's from each application cycle and go with those candidates. You want to work hard enough to land in that pile. There are several other programs here; search for the other accredited programs that are around.
Another important component is a VERY personal essay. Write about something that means a lot to you. Moves you. Those often are the essays that stand out.
Source: A student who was you 2 years ago. I trained as a CNA to show I was willing to work from the ground up. I studied until I fell asleep on my highlighters ? I promise you it will pay off. You WILL get into a program if you work hard. I wish you the very best of luck. CUNY schools are great for prereq coursework also. Affordable and flexible.
P.S. Don't compare yourself to ANY ONE ELSE. It will steal all the joy you work for. You'll see a lot on these sites and meet a lot of people along the way who are brilliant & smart but no one knows your story like you do. Rewrite a new beginning for yourself!

Okay great! Congrats on being accepted that’s Awesome. But Thanks for the info! I will go on Lehman’s website to see what exactly pre reqs i need. If I’m accepted into hunter i will do them there and apply for their program next year and Lehman’s too. Just want to do the best i can in these science courses i know their hard ?

Thank you NYCBelle! your words were so helpful and encouraging. I really appreciate that feedback. I will make sure to go up and beyond to get an A in the science courses for sure. I actually love science and it was one of my better subjects in grade school and college. Only scary one is chemistry because of the formulas but i will get a tutor if need be. I probably should find out exactly what all the pre req requires are for each school. I know some want psychology and nutrition.

It will be best to attend a community college to take your pre-reqs and while taking chemistry you can apply to Montefiore School of Nursing associates program. They only require chem and the Kaplan exam so you have good chances based on your circumstances. If you do not get accepted you can keep working on your pre-reqs. Once you have A&P 1,2 and micro then you can also apply to Cochran School of Nursing associates program. If the community college you are in has an associates program it would be good to apply there too if you qualify. Most accelerates bachelors programs would look for at least a 3.0 GPA so I would recommend an associates for now to get your license.
