Hi Everyone, I'm a new grad and would like to learn some strategies for following up with resume after applying for a position or just simply faxing it to the HR. How often do you call the HR and what do you say? How do I appear persistent and not annoying to them?
Also, if after an interview and the recruiter doesn't contact you and when you follow-up, they don't show interest... should I just move on and stop calling them in the future?
Since hospitals are difficult to get into nowadays, I have heard that a good alternative is to search for skilled nursing LTC facilities. Does anyone know of any LTC facilities in NY area that provides good training to new grads?
Thanks everyone!!

Personally, after hearing alot of horror stories; i.e not long enough orientation, 30+ patients and some other things I wouldnt be going into LTC as a new grad. Now I'm sure what I've read about on here isn't the norm but it's enough to make me want to stay away from it and plus I just dont like long term care because it doesn't keep me moving. I would try and put applications into any hospital that you might want to work at, it's worth a shot at least and what have you got to lose? I just dont think LTC is a good place for a new grad IMHO, I think there are skills that we need to learn and master before we can safely provide care for up to 30 PTs. Some people may disagree with me but to each their own. I' m a new grad and I've past my 6 month mark and I'm currently in the ICU/CCU because as my NM put it. I'm too good to work on a regular floor lol (not to toot my own horn or anything) lol. You will find something you just have to look. I lost my first job and I was able t find another one within 3 weeks, just have perseverance and some patience and you'll be fine, but good luck in wherever or whatever you decide to do.
thanks EMT, i'm just getting worried because I've been hunting since May 2009. =( right now i'm just doing a temp job at clinics but that's not much of an experience

I had no other option but to start in a LTC facility after graduating recently. No hospitals in my area were hiring. I fortunately work on a sub-acute rehab unit and have gained valuable experience that I wouldn't be getting if I hadn't taken this job. Was it my first choice? No. Do I like it there? Eh, not really but I am learning as much as I can (for example, if a foley needs to go in, I ask my co-workers to let me know so I can do it and feel comfortable). Also, you will get a large patient load but I still think it helps in time management which is an important skill for any new new nurse.
I believe if you cannot get into a hospital but cannot wait to gain employment then it's not a bad place to start. I think a subacute rehab unit is closest to a hospital setting.
I don't know if there are many LTC facilities in Manhattan but I live in Westchester and there are several. GL
