Does anyone know if NY state has legislation stating the maximum number of patients a nurse should care for? I work the 3-11 shift in a LTC facility and could have 40 patients all at once. This number stresses me out and I feel so rushed that I'm shortchanging the patients. What do you think? Is there a law? Any feedback you can provide will be appreciated. Thanks!

NY does not have mandated staffing ratios.
Check the NY State Nurses Association page for info on the subject. They have tried to put forward legislature in the past: http://www.nysna.org/practice/staffing/intro.htm
If this an issue you care about, join NYSNA and put some money and energy towards lobbying for change.
