NVCC or LFCC? Which is the better school?

Hello all!

Right now I am currently enrolled into Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) to take my prerequisites to get into the nursing program. However looking further down the road, I will have to drive to NVCC's Springfield campus which will end up being a 1-2 hour commute for me. My other option to shorten my commute would be to go to Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC). My only problem / concern is that I cannot really find too much information about LFCC and or it's quality of it's nursing program.

Does anyone have any opinions on either of these schools? I have heard that NVCC's nursing program is pretty good.

I think both schools are great. If I had to put my finger on one it would be NVCC. I have heard plenty of feedback from nurses working at hospitals within the area that NVCC students are ususally well prepared and that they would hire them any day, including on a Sunday :-)

At the end of the day to find work you would need to pass your boards. Nursing is different from other professions i.e. business where a graduate from Harvard or any IV league college would get first choice. My

There are two sources on the web that you can use to evaluate schools. One is the NCLEX pass rates on the website for the Virginia Board of Nursing: http://www.dhp.virginia.gov/nursing/nursing_edprogs.htm. This shows the pass rate for 2010, as well as over the past 5 years.

A second source of information is to look at which programs are accredited by the National League of Nursing (NLN) at http://www.nlnac.org/Forms/directorySearch.asp. Schools that do not appear in the NLNAC listing are not nationally accredited in nursing.

I do not know anything about the relative quality of NVCC's ADN program versus LFCC's ADN program, but the quality of their programs is less relevant than your eligibility to be accepted at either one. Remember that NVCC services the residents of certain counties, while LFCC services residents of different counties. You have a better chance of being accepted by the ADN program that services the county that you live in. If you apply to the ADN program of the school that does not service the county where you live then you will have less priority for acceptance.

Also, a major difference between the NVCC and the LFCC ADN programs is that NVCC only has one ADN program conducted at the Medical Education Campus in Springfield, while LFCC actually has two separate ADN programs conducted at the Middletown Campus and the Warrenton Campus.
