Hello-
I'm new to this forum and was wondering are there any NVCC Nursing students here? I have applied for nursing program at NVCC Fall 2008-heard it's a competative program this year. Has anyone received their acceptance letter for Fall 2008? To the existing students, any advice for new students? Thanks!
hmmmm here in Falls Church it is 2008.
I'm in the final year!! Or year 2 of 2. 3rd semester of 4.
For the orientation and dosage exams, you have to provide the answer, NO multiple choice. They do provide you a calculator.
in EVERY theory exam you write for nur 111/118 there will be math questions, but with these ones, you have multiple choice!! usually 3-4 for each exam, maybe closer to 8-10 on the final exams.
And you have to provide your own scantron sheets for the exams! We had to purchase the RED ones (the bookstore does sell green as well). You will get all this info at orientation.
Can anyone explain how NUR 111 works? I understand that there is a lecture and a clinical component. However the only lecture time available listed in the schedule of classes is Mon 1-5:30 (2 sections, 30 students each). I spoke to the admin assistant in the nursing department and she was very vague - stating only that we will learn everything in the orientation. Also do we get to choose what day we want for the clinical? thanks to anyone who can answer my questions!
Yes NUR 111 is a lecture, 3 hrs in length I believe. For us (last yr) it was held on Mondays--and mondays only!!!! There were 2 lecture rooms being utilized from 1300-1600, then 2 more lecture rooms from 1630 to like 1930. So one had to choose from one of those 4 selections, which fall within the 2 time frames
As well you have LAB once a week. For the first 4-5 weeks lab is like 3 hrs in length, then shorten to something like 1.5 hrs. You don't have any clinicals (hospital)the first 4-5 weeks. As well we had a class called CLS which is once a week for like 2 hours. There is homework for that class, but its very light.
What most try to do is get lab on the same date as your lecture OR as your CLS class. I would recommend NOT getting it on the same day as your lecture class
Think my rotation for the very first semester was something like
MONDAY: NUR 111 lecture 1300-1600
Tuesday: LAb first thing in morning, then CLS
Clinical Thursday--which is all day, you dont get to pick your clinical the first year, BUT you can try to exchange with another student, once clinical sites are posted--Which should be orientation
May have not been that clear, as I was in a rush!
For the lecture portion, 111 in first semester, 118in the second semester, they take place only on ONE day of the week. lecture is 3 hours in duration. For us it was either 1300-1600 OR 1630-1930. We had it on Mondays for both semesters. For NUR 216 (3rd semester) we have it on Thursdays!
The CLS, and LAb take place numerous times during the week, plus throw in your clinical (hospital) rotation. So one has to work their CLS and lab around the lecture and Clinical. For the first year, they assign you your clinical location, but you can try and exchange with another student. No clue on how the school picks clinicals. I lucked out and all of mine were close by, but that wasn't the case for many others, luck of the draw.
Most students don't like early lab, so they are the last to go.
When it comes to picking your classes, the school will open the gates on a predetermined date, ie Aug 10 at 10 am. One can have their desired classes in your "basket" on blackboard all raring to go,then hit the big ok button and keep doing that until they open the gates!! Just make sure you have NO holds on your account (over due books, etc)
They will cover all this at orientation, and you will probably still be confused, lol
Hello,
I just received my letter of acceptance into the nursing program, BUT I'm on a "waiting list". My portfolio apparently met all the requirements, BUT I have to wait until any slots open up before I'm actually in . I'm so stressed out b/c I thought that by now I would have gotten a more definite answer, I guess not. Could someone please help me out and let me know what my chances really are of actually getting in this year? I doubt anyone is really going to decline their acceptance into the program.
Hard to say what your chances are since this is the first year that it was competitive. Letters just went out last Friday, so it could be awhile before you know. but I do recall some people dropping out early last year. Others will get accepted at other schools, and go there, some will just change their mind. So there is always a chance. last year they accepted close to 250 students, biggest class ever. This year they only accepted around 170. Did they say where on the wait list you were? Best of luck

Lets see what we had to do last year:
1) math exam at orientation. pass that one, your safe for awhile. fail that exam, then those people had to sign up for another math class, think someone stated it was 8 weeks in duration. Study that math package, lol
2) In the first semester I believe we had a practice dosage exam, it didnt count, but gave you an idea of what was coming in the second semester. 20 questions, one requires 90% to pass.
3) We had the real dosage exam early on in the second semester. One gets two tries to pass, if not, your out, simple as that, lol One fellow had a high 90 average in the theory, but didn't pass the dosage exam and he was shown the door. Ours was 20 questions, 90% required to pass.
4) We have another dosage exam 2nd week of Fall 2008 classes, and there will be another in our last semester.
The questions are not super hard--at least not yet,lol but people rush, and don't read the whole question. other common mistakes are not rounding off properly. and forgetting the zero, ie .75 is written as 0.75 no zero, its wrong!!! and there are a few tricky questions like you get the answer of 5ml, but you didn't read the whole question and they wanted the answer in tsp (1 tsp)
You get an hour to do the 20 questions, so take ur time and double check your work, its not a race. And of course the info I passed on above was based on last years program, so yours may differ. Congrats
