Nursing Student Success course

Nursing Students General Students

Hey everyone! I've been reading on here for some time now and there has been some acceptance topics. Has anyone ever taken a nursing student success course prior to starting a nursing program? If so what was it like, was the course hard, and was it helpful? I got an email today saying I am selected for a nursing program that starts on Aug 2015. They want us to do a nursing student success course that is 8 weeks long. It begins in late Jan and goes through march and also again on late march to late may. I haven't received the add code for the course yet though. I am surprised as the email came earlier than expected, I was told that the emails go out in Jan. Off to a great christmas present so far :)

Thank you for the tips and advice:bookworm:

It's only 2 weeks off! I'm enjoying them, but I'm actually ready to get back into the swing of things.

I haven't had any clinicals yet. My program prefers to have the pre-reqs taught along side the nursing courses, so we haven't gotten there yet. This semester was Dosage & Calc, Success Strategies, and A&P. Next semester I have Nutrition and Diet Therapy, Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Fundamentals. Our clinicals are due to start in March, but I'm not sure how much clinical time we'll get in for that part of the second semester.

From what I know, starting May at least, it'll be 48 hours clinical per 8 weeks per nursing course (our semesters are broken down into 2 - 8 week sections so we have 4 classes per semester, but are only taking 2 at a time). Then I think last semester we have a certain amount of community service plus, I think, 96 hours for our practicum.

From what I heard from the seniors, our clinical days are Saturdays for 8 hours. Senior year January/February is the only exception where we have clinicals Saturdays and Sundays (I think that's the only 8 weeks where we have 2 nursing courses together for clinicals). I know some of the rotations will be during the week (OR, home health, and I think psych).

I think the majority of it will be in a hospital though. The night before we have to go to our clinical site to research our patient.

So I haven't gotten to that exciting/nerve wracking part yet! :)

after looking at the handbook of my cc, the nursing program that I got accepted into has nursing courses scheduled in 8 week blocks. It seems like there are 2 blocks for one whole semester?

It has been a while since I last took a course in 8 weeks, it was microbio that I took during a summer session.

it sounds like busy busy work since it's multiple classes in 8 weeks.

Do you know how many classes you will have per 8 weeks?

Your semesters sound like ours - 1 semester broken down into 2 - 8 week sessions. It's hard. The way it was told to me before starting was "flying by the seat of your pants", and after my first 8 weeks, there truly was no better way to put it. My first 8 weeks we had 3 classes - the rest of the program will only be 2 classes per 8 weeks (but there will be the addition of clinicals, so it might as well be a third class!).

I will say that those first 8 weeks flew by. I'm still learning time management, but it's something that is absolutely essential, especially with the 8 week courses. My last 8 weeks I thankfully only had 1 class as my credits transferred for the other, so the last 8 weeks really seemed to drag, but it was nice to be able to devote my time to 1 class.

My school's rationale for the 8 week blocks is so that we're only focusing on 2 classes at a time vs 4. So it's only 2 finals vs 4. As hard as it is, I like it. It's so fast paced, but the light at the end of the tunnel seems so much nearer!

It can feel overwhelming, but I also wouldn't change it for the world (right now).

Hey Dorkypanda did you get your add code? I've waited all day and still don't have mine. I sent her an email, but I think it was too late in the day...

I don't really know how it works as we haven't been introduced to the structure yet of how the program is.

Lidia,

I sent her an email this morning as well but no response yet. Maybe we can try calling her instead if we get no response.

I see two add codes from the class schedule online but I don't know if they are the same ones we will be given?

Ok, thanks Dorkypanda, I will call tomorrow too! I just didn't know if I was forgotten

I think calling her was the best option. Are you taking the jan or late march class?

I emailed and got the code. I wanted to start in march. Are you going to do it in jan?

Yeah I need to get busy again.

Did you tell her that you accepted the admission to the program?

I did the first day! Please let me know how the orientation course is! Next week I will go get my immunization taken care of.

Hi lidia

Which immunization? I thought we turned in immunization as part of the application ?
