Nursing student health insurance?

Published

Hello! I need help/information about health insurance. I recently got into my college's nursing program and was asked to provide a copy of my health insurance card. The problem is I don't have one and I don't know how to get one. I did try to sign up from healthcare.gov, but it isn't certain that I'll be eligible for the late enrollment. I am a legal resident, but I heard you must be at least been in the US for 5 years (I've only been here for four years!). I don't think my school offers it as well. My best bet would be applying for an individual health insurance, but I don't know where to do it or to even start, let alone paying for it.

Does anyone know where I can get health insurance for a less expensive cost?

I'm sorry for whining, I just don't want this to be the reason to stop me from starting nursing.

Back before the health exchange I bought a catastrophic policy thru Einsurance.com for $100/mo. Try there perhaps?

The first thing you should do is call your college and tell them your situation. You do not have insurance, you're not sure you can afford it, what do they recommend? My program required us to get a physical and vaccines and such, but never required us to provide our insurance info. Not really sure why they'd need that?

We had to provide insurance info per some school policy, otherwise we had to buy the schools insurance.

I will check them out. Thank you!

I've been thinking of doing that as well. It's required before all students start their clinicals. I'm just afraid I wouldn't be able to afford it.

My school doesn't offer health insurance to its students, therefore they have no authority to mandate us to have it, so I lucked out with that because I'm uninsured too.

Since they have required their students to purchase insurance, I'm sure there is somebody at the school you can talk to who can walk you through your options with this. There are probably tons more people in your same predicament. I would be too if I were forced to get it.

Hello, everyone!

So I called the school and they weren't really offering any sort of health insurance. I believe it's because of a law (I'm in NJ) that was passed 3 years ago saying that (full-time) students aren't required to purchase one from the school so they stopped offering it entirely. I cannot use Einsurance.com as well because all they offer outside of open enrollment is a short term insurance which they don't allow in my state (THE STRUGGLE). My admission all depends on getting hired in a job that offers health insurance! I'm not sure what will happen, I'm trying to remain hopeful, but also thinking of having a back-up plan. I cried for two days because of this, haha!

Thank you for helping me out!

I'm sorry your state doesn't allow short term insurance, that's what I had to do. I wanted to let you know though that you are eligible for obamacare. My sister's new husband was able to sign up for it right away. He is also a legal resident. You probably won't be able to sign up until the enrollment starts back up though, unless you have married/divorced or had a baby in the last three months. Are you low-income? Perhaps medicaid is an option?

It's okay! This will only make me stronger, haha! I might be! But then again, I don't have any life qualifying events, like the ones you mentioned, so I still don't qualify for coverage outside the enrollment. I am also low-income, so low that they actually questioned it!

Hello I just wanted a update to what had happened since you didn't have heath insurance. I am in your ama situation
