I have another dilemina in trying to solve the following problems ... I have to know it inside out, because my last try is Monday:(.

Oh, I did take the Pediatric Med calc this morning, I feel confident that I passed it. I won't know until later, Please pray for me, everyone....

#1. Order is to administer 300ml NSS 0.9 at 150ml/hr. the drop factor is 20gtt/min. the IV should infuse at _____________ gtt/min.

#2. order: administer 1000ml of D5W at 40 ml/hr. the IV is started Oct 8th at 10am.

How many hours will the IV infuse?_________

What time will the IV be completed?__________

1).

Volume X drip rate

hrs X minutes = gtt/min

2). total volume = infusion time

time (ml/hr rate)

1000ml

40ml/hr = 25 hrs

what time will the iv be completed? Oct. 9th @ 11am

someone correct me if i am wrong, i am in the same boat with the same paddle on this math.

I don't understand why 300ml wasn't used in solving the 1st problem? Can anyone explain it to me....:)

It's not used because it's not needed to figure out the gtt/min. The only things that are needed are the rate of infusion in ml/hr and the drop factor. If you had a problem where you had to figure out the ml/hr first, then it would be used to figure out that. The key is to pick out the information that you NEED to figure out what they are asking for.

Try this one I found in my Dosage Calc book:

Order: 0.45% NaCl 3000 ml IV for 24 h

Drop factor: 15 gtt/ml

Flow rate:_____ ml/h

Flow rate:_____ gtt/min

I would take 3000ml divided by 24hr to get how much would run every hr.

3000/24 = 125ml/hr , so 125ml would run every hour....

then I would take 125ml x 15gtt/60min which = 31gtt/min.

Please check for me , I want to make sure that i am understanding the concept. Please if you have time keep the math problems coming. I do have a med math calc book that I am currently working on.

Very good! It just takes a lot of practice and even after you know how to do them, keep practicing. Every time I come across a calc on here, I try to work it.

I'll see if I can post some more this evening. I have a long day of class ahead of me. lol

Question one. The 300 is meaningless info, not needed to answer question. All is needed is the rate in a specified time and the drip factor.

150ml x 20gtt/cc / 60mins = 50 gtts/min

Where do I get these numbers? Remember the question states 150ml/hour. Right there you have the amount to be infused and the time, remember the bottom of this equation is in mins. the drip rate is stated in the question.

Of course, if you want to say "but, the question says 300ml" remember that is the TOTAL amount, @ 150ml/hour that would take two hours to infuse so you could replace the 150 with 300 and the 60 with 120 in the equation but the result is the same.

I don't understand why 300ml wasn't used in solving the 1st problem? Can anyone explain it to me....:)

It's put there to confuse you. To see if you understand that the info is not necessary to answer the question.
