I'm a Nurse and I am Stronger

As a senior nursing student, I faced the realization that no matter how smart I am, I am not infallible. I wrote this parody of Kelly Clarkson's "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger" to remind myself that there is a reason for all of this insanity. This really helped me get through a crazy final semester and has helped many other nursing students as well. I hope that you can benefit as well. Nurses Announcements Archive Article

I'm a Nurse and I am Stronger

I had been at the top of my class my entire life. In fact, I remember in high school contesting a 95 because I was so unused to grades below an A+. Yes, I was that student. When I was in a CNA program, other students were upset because I ruined the curve. I knew that many nursing students experience the difficulty in adjusting from the top of their class to the mediocre. As much as I tried preparing myself, I could not accept that this could happen to me.

Therefore, when I failed a test during my final semester, I was horrified. In fact, I considered dropping out altogether. As I was on my way home from school that day, I heard Kelly Clarkson's "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger" on the radio. I wrote this parody when I got home.

One reason that I find it especially apropos is because while in nursing school, I really felt like I was in a relationship with my education.

(Based on: "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger" from Kelly Clarkson)

You know I feel much calmer

Now that I am done

You know I dream in color

And do the things I want

They thought they'd get the best of me

Thought that I would never last

Bet you think that everything is over now

Thought they'd leave me broken heart

Thought that I'd just fall apart

They just don't know me, 'cause their dead wrong!

Chorus:

Another F just makes you stronger

Study little longer

Told you I would get through, I'm not wrong

Another test just makes a fighter

Makes me even brighter

Told you I would finish, though it's long

Another F just makes you stronger, Stronger

Just me, myself, and I

Another test, I'll study longer

Stay up even longer

I may be overworked but, oh, I'll be done

I heard you say you're finished, you won't get through

I told you I'd keep plugging on, my dream'd come true

You didn't think I'd really pass

I'd pass and finish

You tried to break me, but I'm free at last

Chorus:

Another F just makes you stronger

Study little longer

Told you I would get through, I'm not wrong

Another test just makes a fighter

Makes me even brighter

Told you I would finish, though it's long

Thanks to you I got a new thing started

Thanks to you I'm not the broken-hearted

Thanks to you I'm finally graduating, see

You know in the end (School Name) Nursing, I finished my dream

I'm a nurse...

Chorus:

Another F just makes you stronger

Study little longer

Told you I would get through, I'm not wrong

Another test just makes a fighter

Makes me even brighter

Told you I would finish, though it's long

Now I'm a nurse and I am stronger, stronger

Just me, myself, and I

Just NCLEX, I'll study longer

Stay up even longer

I may be overworked but, oh, I'll be done

I'm an RN

I hope that you have enjoyed and maybe even benefitted. Remember that you have more control than you may believe, and that like any other relationship, there will be more than just peaches and cream!

Your article cracked me up because I saw so many similarities to my same experience. I don't think anyone else can ever understand unless you've been through it yourself. We used to always tell each other, "Just keep swimming" like Nemo. One of my best friends and I felt the song "Every Storm Runs Outta Rain" was especially appropriate to those few professors who made our lives pure hell at times. Check out those lyrics!

That was one of my favorite movies in nursing school. After nursing school, I liked to refer to my post-nursing amnesia as an excuse when my brain freezes.

I especially enjoy writing parodies of popular songs based on life experiences. I am open to suggestions for songs that you would like to see redone...

Great article and really a motivating one.
