How can I ease her anxiety? She said it is because one of the LPNs had hurt her when she had to have the catheter inserted last time, please share your tricks with me.

to make this pain free for both her and myself

This is my very first live catheter insertion:uhoh21:

I assume this is LTC? In my limited experience patients with indwelling foley's are very easy to cath i.e. the urethral opening is very apparent. She must be told that you are a student and if she wants to refuse that is her right to do so. If she allows you to do the cath change then do not appear nervous yourself. Be gentle in all of your movements, be soft and soothing with your voice and remember to drape her approprately. I do agree your instructor should choose another patient for you to cath :nurse:

your instructor is not being sensitive to the needs of this patient.

ticks me off.

preserve pt's dignity, address concerns and act like you know what you're doing.

i know this is a lot to ask of a spanking new student...

this is why your instructor is so wrong on different levels.

poor pt...

all due respect, i hope she refuses.

remind her of her rights, will you please?

I agree

and I will remind her of her rights!

Take care

you've been lucky, binkie.

i've cath'd a million lol's and if you can cath them, you can cath any woman.

there are many who are not anatomically correct:

folds of skin;

working through/with contractures;

or, the lol who just refuses to open her darned legs.:)

in my experiences, the urethra has not been so apparent.

oy.
