does anyone have a specialty or specific reason they are drawn to/ are pursuing nursing? I love reading this forum but sometimes it gets very repetitive with all the questions about gpa and prerequisites. I'd love to find "community" here, if you will. Where are all you active allnurses members at on your educational journey?

I originally pursued nursing to become a Certified Nurse Midwife. After becoming a CNA and working in a nursing home and then a hospital, I fell in love with the healthcare field. I no longer want to become a midwife but I'm still attracted to the flexibility and possibilities that come with a career in nursing. I love taking care of people and can't think of anything else I'd rather do at this point. I am in my second semester of a four semester ADN program.

Currently in my senior year of my 2-year BSN program. Thought I wanted to go into peds when I got into nursing school. Still haven't done my peds rotation, but am intersted in oncology now (specifically, bone marrow transplant). A lot of my peers have changed their minds about what kind of specialty they want to go into and most still don't know. What's important is that you know what you don't want to do (psych and L&D/OB are the bane of my existence) and try to figure it out from there. And the great thing is that you can switch specialties if you get bored. It's not as difficult to do compared to other fields. I have professors who have switched form respiratory to L&D to burn care to outpatient. The possiblities are endless and that's one of the things I love about nursing!
