There is, BY FAR, absolutely NO nursing shortage in California (at least, not where I live - in the Bay Area).
I am graduating in May and I am SO SO SO SO SO anxious that I will not find a job. Especially with the economy the way it is.
The hospital I used to work at (UCSF) and that I dream of working for when I graduate is currently on a hiring freeze (until who knows when). Although I will be doing my preceptorship there (YES!!)
, I am still fretting to the point of - I swear - developing an ulcer. I owe waaaayyyyy too much $$ on loans to not work.
Coincidentally, I work as a unit secretary at a different hospital, but even that's no guarantee (I would rather work at UC, to be honest - I loved it when I worked at UC and I love academic hospitals).
A girl in the cohort that graduated last year still hasn't found a job....and she speaks Russian!!!!! (huge bonus points here).
Anyone else in the Bay fretting?
Well, it seems the shortage doesn't exist here in northern Virginia either. HCA has just laid off some nurses, mainly educators, but I think this just speaks to their idea that nurses aren't worth spending money on for contining ed.
Reston has never been a big teaching hospital. They are looking to hire RNs who can hit the ground running.
I am graduating from CSUEB in 5 weeks (yes, we graduate in March- different I know) and we are all on edge. All these freezes are disheartening and those with new grad programs are getting hundreds of applications. Eden had 15 spots open and received almost 800 applications!
I have the advantage of a work study through Kaiser I have been doing since June of last year and in the past work study students have been hired by Kaiser. Now the unit I am in is doing things like taking the PRN nurse out and expecting the charge nurse to cover breaks so it's clear there is a budget issue (though, of course, the union and nurses are fighting this!) and they won't be hiring.
Like others, I will take any job I can; the idea of having loans to start paying in September with no job is downright frightening. From what I understand, the problem is a combination of freezes, travel nurses being hired instead of locals (my preceptorship unit had quite a few travelers), economic downturn and way too many nursing schools in a concentrated area and I am sure other factors I am unaware of. . . so, if I must relocate, so be it. But first I have to pass the NCLEX!
Good luck to us all!
Btw, I can understand new grads not getting jobs but experienced nurses? 19 years experience and no offers? That shocks me.

Hi,
I can't find any jobs now. Not a lots of new grad program here. When there is one, 300 to 600 applicants, so I don't what I can do. losing hope. Any suggestion? I also want to get in UCSF, someone said we can talk to manager. But How can I get to know the manager?
thanks
Hi there! I graduated in the Bay Area in May 2008. Me and many of my classmates had difficulty finding jobs. However, I do know for sure that some hospitals are starting their new grad programs soon (Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley and San Leandro Hospital), there are a ton of new grad positions listed on their website so try there. SO START APPLYING NOW! I know it is only January, but I wish I had received this advice when I was in school, you need to start looking for a job NOW!Eden is a good hospital and they pay well. I really wanted to work in med/surg, so I took a position far far away!! I am no longer in the Bay, I don't miss the traffic by the way! I made a good choice, I am getting great experience at the hospital I am at currently, and I may return to the Bay eventually! Good luck and please keep us posted!
Hi,
Did you get in any new grad program? Any suggestions for me?
thanks

Trust me....If I have to start on a SNF (or whatever "least favorite" unit) - I will do it because I know beggars can't be choosers and I need to start paying off loans! I absolutely dread SNF (someitmes I get floated there from the ICU where I work) and it sucks. I hate it.But hey, if I need to, I will take the job at a SNF just to get some experience and pay bills.
It's just frustrating going into the nursing program (2nd degree for me) thinking I will have little problem finding work and I now know that couldn't be farther from the truth. I realize that the Bay Area is attractive to some people (myself included - it's my home), but it just sucks right now.
Hi,
what is "SNF"? I still can't find the job. Some new grad program, but 300 applicants, or if you know someone in hospital. I don't know how to do to get the job here? I have BSN. losing hope.
Any suggestions?
thanks
I have heard from someone who works at UCSF that there may be a new grad program beginning in August - hope it's true and that they hire a bunch!
yes, it is true. That is NICU training program, i will apply. but i kind like losing hope. I apply standford, no one call me. Then i call back. the position already filled. I did all they want me to do. what about you?

I was lucky and got hired at SF General in April - but I have friends who graduated with me that are very discouraged and can't find any new grad openings. I am hoping for them! I wish you good luck too!

I just spoke to a nurse recruiter friend at Georgetown and they will not be hiring until February 2010!
