nursing shoes/clogs

Published

I am starting my career as an RN and all I have are the nursing shoes that I had to wear in nursing school and they are not comfortable. I asked my manager if there were specific shoes that I needed to get and she said that I should wear whatever is comfortable. Help! I'm not sure what is comfortable. Do I wear white sneakers, do I get nursing shoes, clogs? I have done some research and alot of people seem to like the Birkenstock clogs, or New Balance. Any advice for me? Thanks.

I love my Danskos... wore them the last three years. Mine are the professional (or occupational... whatever it's called), with the back and more athletic sole (not a wedge). Different things work for different people but my feet and back hurt easily and I'd fight someone over my Danskos before I'd let them go!! Got mine at zappos.com but now I want to go ck out that Danskooutlet.com (thanks Ruby :)

another suggestion/...

birkies are great but SO EXPENSIVE! i took my favorite sneakers (rikas) and bought a new pair, then just put a birkenstock insole in each one. it makes them so much more supportive for the long days( and i'm just a student). anyway birkenstock insoles are forsale http://www.birkenstock.com

Well I ordered a pair of croc's today online, went up to the next full size. So we shall see.

Nike SHOX are awesome....people area always saying how cool my "spring-loaded" shoes look! My feet never hurt, even after 12 hours of running my tail off.

Do any of you have very narrow feet and if so, have you found nursing shoes that work for you?

Finding regular shoes that fit my feet is a nightmare, and I know that I am going to need a very comfortable, supportive pair for clinicals this Fall.

Congrats on starting your nursing career! I know that for my clinicals I had to wear what the school said I had to wear, which kind of stunk. By the last semester, I saw though that some of the students were getting away with wearing white sneakers. We were told which store to go to and had to pick out of what they had. It's funny cause now I go back and alot of the shoes that I want to wear for nursing come in small, medium, large and I don't fit into one of those categories so I feel your pain. I was told that New Balance were comfortable, so I went to try on a pair and they didn't feel too good for me. I think that we all kind of have to go through a trial and error to see what works individually, sorry I couldn't be more help.

I have narrow ankles and bought the Dansko professionals. They have a covered heel. My ankle comes up, but it's meant to do that. At first, I thought the clog had to fit like a shoe in the back, but when I realized the covered heel was really just for protection and didn't need to fit "snugly", it was fine. They work for me. Try on a pair and see how you like it.

You can also get white tennis shoes and insert Dr. Scholl's pads (aerosoles) if you want to be really comfy. My school just required that the shoes be either navy or white with no loud insignia's. Several of my classmates bought white tennis shoes (like you find at Payless Shoes) and were fine. Good luck.

I thought crocs were so ugly, but my Nike shocks weren't cutting it, so I tried the crocs on a whim. I'm so happy with them. I'm not so miserable during a 12 hour shift.
