Nursing schools/programs in VA

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any good nursing schools/programs in VA?

Right now I'm in Fairfax and I'm thinking that if I am going to go to school full time I will definately have to move to a low cost area because I live all by myself and am far from my family and there is no way I will be able to survive here without being homeless or racking up thousands in debt for room and board. I'm not too attached to this area anyway. I just thought that someone here could suggest a decent place to live and go to school in VA.

Thanks in advance :-)

You should be able to find schools listed in Virginia. I live in Newport News/Hampton Roads area and ODU in Norfolk as well as Hampton U. have great programs. If you are looking at living on campus, they have all the info on there. If you are looking for an apartment, check out Rent.net or apartments.com. Good luck.!

Northern Virginia Community College (http://www.nvcc.edu) has an ADN two year program. The medical campus is in Springfield.

I took some prerequisite nursing classes at northern virginia community college and loved all of my classes and professors. I am not as happy with George Mason University, where I am in a BSN program. I don't recommend it. You may want to look into Marymount University in Arlington, VA. It is only about 15 minutes from Fairfax!

FWIW, Marymount is very expensive and they have a low NCLEX pass rate. If you're okay with an ADN, NVCC is very affordable, has a high pass rate and is well regarded by nursing professionals in the community (or so I've heard...). Rumor also has it that NVCC is starting an evening/weekend program in Jan.... Feel free to PM with any questions.

Contrary to the other post.. I graduated from GMU and I enjoyed their program.

What about UVA? That was one of the schools I had considered. Looked to be pretty good.

I'd be interesting in hearing more about GMU, those of you who have gone there ... I'm graduating with my biochem degree in May and I've thought about doing their accelerated BSN afterwards ... anyone here who's done that?

I am interested in attending Marymount University in Arlington VA. I just wanted to know if anyone heard any good/bad things about the programs. I am looking to relocate to the VA area from Charlotte NC. Does anyone have any recommendations on safe areas to live/ and jobs. I currently hold my MSW looking to do a career change to nursing. I would also like to continue to work. Please help..I am open to any suggestions.

Does anyone know anything about JMU's program in Harrisonburg? I'm looking to move to a not so pricey area, I live in Haymarket right now, go to GMU, its just too much right now.

If you go to the Viriginia Area Health Eduction Certers website (http://www.views.vcu.edu/ahec), you can find an online copy of the Virginia Health Careers manual. It includes lots of basic information about a variety of health careers. It also includes a list of all the nursing schools in Virginia, giving phone numbers, websites, etc. to contact for more information.

While that information is about 3 years old (a new edition is in the works), it is a great place to start. You can go to all the schools' website, contact them for detailed information, etc. As you can see from the previous posts, one person may be very happy with a particular school while another hates it.

You can get similar information at the state's board of nursing site.

Good luck,

hi there. I am currently an ADN second degree nursing student at marymount. It is very expensive but classes are small. Im breaking my back with loans. teachers are ok. i have heard the nclex pass rate is low. since then, marymount nursing has adopted ATI services. You take exams after every course to predict how well youll do on your nclex. i dont take them till december. my advice, look into NOVA. its much cheaper and youll get the same, if not better results. I do have to say one of the major benefits is it is the shorteset second degree program in the area. (3 semesters)
