At the College of Southern Idaho where I attend nursing school our uniforms are required to be white, with white tennis shoes, and any shirts worn underneath need to be white. We were told from the faculty that white makes a student nurse look more professional and easier to recognize for the patient.

Do other schools out there require this philosophy and if so how do you feel about it?

Thank you for taking time to discuss this.

Not sure about other schools, but I'm starting the direct-entry MSN program at the MGH IHP this fall and have heard that the uniforms are teal scrubs with a school patch. So no, not all schools require white uniforms. I'm kind of relieved that mine doesn't as I think white is rather impractical.

I went through an ADN program in north texas that required us to wear all white. It wasn't so bad, and it made us stand out from the nurses at the hospitals we had clinicals at, so we wouldn't be easily mistaken by anyone. Of course, after four semesters of it, I won't be wearing all white again any time soon! :)

We are required to wear white and quite frankly I hate it. Not only is it the most unflattering color, its also the most unrealisic color to be wearing and try to keep clean in a hospital setting. The uniforms are no fun but I still love nursing school so I can suck it up till I graduate! :-)

Specializes in OB, lactation.

Yep, ours are all white. It's not that big of a deal to me, though.

Another school in my area still requires students to wear nurse caps!!!! That would be a very big deal to me, to the point that I don't know if I would do it. In this case it does represent a very traditional, rigid program. That's not what I was looking for, my program is more forward thinking and I'm glad! :)

Specializes in labor & delivery.

We wear white. It's not too bad... They bleach easily :) Plus, it's better than the alternative - the new uniforms for the school are hideous... they're black tapered leg pants with a ceil blue top that snaps up the front has little points on either side in the front, only comes to the waist and is gathered in the back.... I'm happy with my whites!!

My last day of wearing my uniform was yesterday. My preceptorship starts in a couple of weeks and I'll be on a critical care unit that provides scrubs. I'm soooo glad to be almost done with school!

We are lucky, though, compared to a lot of schools. Our uniform consists of navy blue scrubs (any style, cut, etc., as long as they're navy blue), white shoes, and a white lab coat. We don't need to wear white or hideous tapered-leg pants.

We have to wear all white- and our uniforms don't BREATHE. All of us wind up looking like we just stepped out of a sauna at the end of the day.

They do bleach easily which is a plus.

Personally, I hate them with a passion!

Oh my god, Our nursing uniform was all white with a white and blue BIB they were so ugly. We also had to wear are hair in a bun. We looked so stupid.

Specializes in medical, telemetry, IMC.

we also have to wear all white. the top has to be a student uniform top (not a scrub top) with our school ptach on the left shoulder. the pants have to pleated or have to have a seam down the front of the legs. underwear and bra have to be white or fleshed-colored. hair has to above the collar or up in a bun (no pony tails allowed). shoes have to be all white, no open-backed shoes allowed.

i'm soooo glad when we graduate in may! :)
