Nursing school and tattoos...

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

Well, I have been accepted into a nursing program and my last worry seems to be if anyone can tell me while I'm in nursing school, I can't finish the program because I have tattoos. I've seen many tattooed nurses and have even seen tattooed doctors, so I know that's not true.

Then I thought about religious people who are also nurses and wear long sleeves, and I wonder if they have ever had a problem?

I have no problems keeping my colorful self covered, and I prefer to anyway because I do not like being asked about them or talk about them. (It gets a little repetitive.) If anyone who has done nursing programs in GA and knows anything that would help shed some light, that would be great!

I've been to most of the hospitals in the area you are concerned about and again if it's covered, there's no issue. (Emory, Emory midtown, choa, dekalb med, Grady, gwinnett med, atlanta med, Georgia regional). The hospital won't typically address the student. They advise the nursing program of the limitations and that's how the policy is usually determined. Also if it's covered the how can anyone comment on something they can't see?[/quote']

Exactly.

I'm sure there's some hand washing that happens. They'll be seen that way. Or I'm not sure if certain clinical sites do not allow long sleeve shirts... Which I hope isn't the case. :-S

I've not heard about a facility that restricts you from wearing long sleeves. All facilities give you the option to even wear scrub jackets. Seeing someones tats while they are washing hands is highly unlikely to be deemed offensive. Because tattoos are more common than even just a few years ago, facilities also have to be careful about discrimination.

I understand your fears but you already have the tattoos and that won't change. Thinking and stressing about this won't change. You will have so many other things to worry about when you start the program (i.e pharmacology, patho, clinicals, lecture) that this should be the farthest thing from your mind.

I've seen people w/ sleeves not affected....I've seen someone w/ a tatooe behind their ear and even hands/wrist area.

I want you to celebrate your recent acceptance. If you need reassurance contact the schools. Call every hospital w/i the radius of where you are applying if that's what you need but I can't see this hindering you at all. Trust me, if I thought otherwise, I would let you know lol.

Tons of tattoos in NS. Cover them. Worry about passing.

Agreed! Can we be any clearer.

You are truly stressing about the wrong thing.

Clinical sites really don't care what you wear. It's the school that does. And the school lets you wear sleeves and a lab coat.

And I edited my self. So much else to stress about.

Thanks all! I just needed some clarity. I agree, I guess I should stop worrying about it. :-)

Thanks so much!

I remember in Gwinnett Tech's orientation said tattoos must be covered, but that could mean anything! I want to make sure I could cover up using clothing. I am definitely not against covering them at all. I prefer to! But yeah, concealer isn't a reasonable option for me, especially since the uniforms are typically white.

Omg girl I told you this... lol. The instructor I spoke with said white long sleeve or lab coat. You are straight.

Yeah, that's my main concern; I do not know the facilities the schools choose so that I can call and ask. :-S

No matter what facilities will allow you to use a scrub coat lab coat or undershirt.
