Nursing School/Phlebotomist

Published

I am currently a nursing student in a five semester ADN program. In less than two weeks I will be starting my third semester. I am supposed to graduate next July, but in the meantime I am hoping to get a job in one of the local hospitals; nothing full time, but rather part time or even PRN. Would I need a special certificate to apply for a job as a phlebotomist?

Yes, most likely. Why not apply as a CNA? It's much more relational to nursing.

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Yes, there's a certification that requires an exam, and you need to go through a phlebotomy program. I agree about getting your CNA instead.

Specializes in Emergency Department.

Typically in order to get a job as a phlebotomist, you will have to take a course, obtain a certain number of draws, and then pass an exam. I would expect that at this point in your schooling, you should be able to pass a CNA exam and you'd be ready to go. Personally, I would suggest getting the CNA certificate and use that to find employment in the hospital. The only reason I'd go for phlebotomy would be if they were holding a position open for you specifically.
