Nursing school and low GPA worried

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I am in school at east Tennessee state university , I messed up my first semester and got a C in A&P 1 . I also took some college courses while in high-school and got a couple of C's I have now retaken those classes and have a B in one and am working towards an A in the other. My advisory told me even if I make all A's this semester ( I am taking A&P 2, history 2, remidal math where I did not do average on my act for math, and art history 2, and psychology. I have an A in all of those classes except A&P 2 will most likely be a B. My advisor said even if I made all A's this semester the best I could do would be a 3.2. Well as far as I know technically you only have to have a 3.0 GPA, but the nursing school at ETSU the lowest they are going to take Spring of 2012 will be 3.6 GPA. I will apply for nursing school Fall of 2011 and if accepted I will begin nursing school in Spring of 2012 as I will have my microbiology and prob and stats math out of the way in Fall of 2011. I plan on taking A&P 1 over this summer and getting an A or a B.

Still though my adviser says I will only have a 3.2. What am I suppose to do with a 3.2 ? I want to go into the nursing field. I hear you can be a LPN for 1 year and get straight into RN school.

Does anyone know of any nursing programs on the east coast that accept lower GPA's like mine? I live in Tennessee so I would like to stay close to home, but this really has me worried as I have wedding plans as soon as I graduate.

Help please? I am in a 4 year program but an willing to do a 2 year.

Well, maybe you could look into applying into another nursing school where your GPA is acceptable. There is always more than one nursing school. Still work hard to bring your grades up though! You can choose to go the LPN route, but you'd still have to take BSN courses once you finish, if you want a BSN. :) Good luck!

Look into a private university, they typicaly take 2.7+ gpa, but be prepared to shell out 12,000+ a semester.

I don't really know all of the classes that you've taken but if I were you I would check my GPA again. To me it looks like if all goes well you will have more A's than B's so I don't know how that equals a 3.2. Just google how to calculate GPA and there are some sights that will help you calculate it. Remedial Math is usually noncredit so that doesn't go towards your GPA anyway. I also say apply to more than one school. I don't know which but some schools look more at your science GPA than any other classes. You also have to take into account your entrance exam score. There are some schools that will accept a low GPA like around 3.0 if you have a high enough exam score. Just some things to think about.

Apply to other schools

that sucks!! they need to consider those that working hard to even get 3.2...im currently working hard to get a 3.3 when entering a nursing program

Good luck!

But how do they measure hard work other than grades? How can you say a student with a 3.95 (60 credits all A's save for 1 B) worked harder than a student with a 4.0? And is someone that worked hard to get a B a better student than someone who breezed through and got an A? That is just not something that is measurable.

Now letters of recommendation do come into play, and if you get a B or a C in a course but the professor will vouch for your work ethic great. But on the same note Nursing Schools are judged by how many of their students graduate and take the NCLEX (public or private it doesnt matter they both have a vested interest in the pass rates of their students), and the number 1 indicator of future performance is past performance.

No matter your GPA, you better have those vol hours, and if its allowed a great essay, resume, and letters of rec. At alot of schools GPA is just part of the package, and with any package a low point in one area can be offset by a high point in another area.

I didnt say they shouldn't measure one's application by grades. you're right there isnt much of any things else to see how well a student is fit for the program than by considering their gpa. All i'm saying is that they shouldn't overlook or put aside when they see a low gpa on an application. people with low gpa have worked hard too just like those with higher gpa's. it's just that some hard work show while the rest doesn't

I currently have a 3.7 yay!!!! I brought it up a lot!! But I still have microbiology to make it through lol hope I make it !!

I currently have a 3.3 gpa and I am retaking AP1, and AP2 Lab. I am also taking Micro and other non science classes. Do you think I can get into a good nursing school in Texas? No community college though.
