Hello,
I am a first year nursing student in a BSN program. I am seeking advice on how to deal with/avoid gossip in the program. We have a small class size, about 26, so it's a really small group. It can be difficult in study groups etc when such topics come up. Any suggestions on how to deal with this?
Thanks

Don't actively participate in it. Don't repeat anything you hear.

Yup...anytime you hear someone gossiping, just look down, pretend to read, etc.
Wait for them to pause in the conversation..then ask a question based on the material.
If they ask your opinion, just give the blanket, "Oh jeez, I don't know _____ that well in order to say anything." or "I wasn't there, so it wouldn't be fair."
They'll figure out really quickly that you aren't going to participate.

The saying is true, "If you gossip with others, what makes you think they will not gossip about you?" I found that out the hard way this semester. Girls I thought were my friends that I use to gossip with were gossiping about me and in a very bad way.
Ignore the gossip, get up and leave and remind them why you are in the study group to begin with. It can be hard but the guys in our class are just disgusted by all the gossip.
