Nursing school fears

Published

Hi everyone! I posted this on the general thread but haven't gotten much of a response so I thoughtI would try the locals. ;) I'm new to this site and am hoping to use it as a resource as I head back to school for nursing.

I've already gotten my BS in another field (useless) and was not happy so I am heading back to do what I wanted to do the first time - nursing!

The reason I didn't the first time was because I had a lot of fears and I am wondering if anyone else was in my boat.

I'm scared of needles (though I worked in a pharmacy and got to use them in the IV room and desensitized myself to them) and some of the usual "medical fears" but it's my hope that instructors help you work through your fears.

Does anyone have any experience or advice with this? Thanks for your help!

I'm in the same boat and just replied as well.

I think humor will help you get through the needles, etc. Although it seems "inappropriate" you'll soon find that many doctors, nurses, etc use humor to get the mind to stop focusing on the "gross" and to make the job of nursing fun.

Of course you don't want to go in laughing your head off. But at least the professor I have is pretty funny and we haven't even started class yet. This is for an A&P class. I was shocked at first to learn that the cd was of a true cadavor that we had to study! The above is the tip that I received. :)

What school are you going to? Why did you decide to go into nursing? Do you have any experience in nursing?

If you don't have any experience (as I don't either) how do you think you'll obtain experience?

Will you too be entering into an accelerated program?

Glad to meet you and good luck with your new nursing career!

Hi. I have been scared of needles my whole life and this was a big concern for me when I began nursing school for the RN program. I am thrilled to share with you that I have overcome this fear, thanks to administering many injections during clinicals. I actually am very comfortable with administering injections. I think when you start your clinicals and actually give injections that you too will feel more comfortable with this skill. :) I hope this helps.
