Nursing salaries/nursing shortages

Nurses Activism

Published

Nursing salaries have not increased significantly to meet the increase in the cost of living. As a result we see more and more leaving the profession, less entering, and a nursing shortage that continues to grow. Its time for nurses to ban together and present alternatives to our politicians to help eliminate the shortages. The solution is not to import nurses from other countries. Its time for the good old USA to step up and take care of her caregivers. National caregivers deserve better wages, better insurance benefits (we receive some of the worst nationally), more assistance with educational debts and other programs that encourage retention/recruitment in our field. In underserved areas doctors get their student loans waived while working in these areas. Why couldn't there be programs like this for nurses since there are short comings of almost 20% even in metro areas. Nurses deserve to be better taken care of since we are the backbone of health care. Its time we collectively speak out to our officials and claim what we deserve.

question for angel or any one else who knows, which nurses recruited are exempt from paying taxes? are they recruited from a particular area? are they recruited by a particular company? just curious. I'm from the Carribean, work with nurses from UK and Phillipines and they seem to be unaware of this. I confess i am quite ignorant as to many of the rules/procedures but i'm learning thanks to this forum

It is an incentive given to recruite nurses from differect countries...dsepends on which countries at which times. Recently recruitement was nurses from Africa....When the USA does this we are basically cutting the other country of having enough nurses...as in Africa they need there nurses due to all the poverity & illness...

It seems that the USA could utilize its own people to educate & become nurses & educators for nursing more effectively.

Oh, I definiatly agree with you. Nurses do need to unite as one from CNA to MSN...The only problem is when there is a nursing shortage the US gov't decides to open up visas & recruites nurses from other countries( they pay no taxes for 7yrs) (recent 55,000 visas)instead of paying nurses what should be paid & give the true education needed so as a MSN nurse can afford to teach people whom want to be nurses in this country.. I've been in the profession 30yrs, worked my way up, offered morse education(gov't re-nigged on $$$$) got stuck paying the education) & at top of pay scale & no more raises(gee I'm only 51yrs old) so why should I promote more people into the field of nursing...it becomes a dead-end job for no advancement usless up & quit to another hospital with less benefits & more pay...

We don't have faculity to teach nursing because the gov't/hospitals/business never gave any incentive for nurses to promote it...So there we are...allowing others to control our profession....YES; we need to unite & change the system for all...

P.S. Most hospitals don't pay healthcare for retired nurses either(the VA does so nurses come into the VA to get 5yrs of healthcare & into retirement)

Which is why I am leaving nursing. I realized that I was in the wrong business. I find myself working very hard with no respect. I am in my early thirties, so I know I have a whole life ahead of me. Why not make a change?

I totally agree with you. The gov't always have good ideas in store. :uhoh3: I just decided to go back to school and pursue a different degree. Maybe some thing that will enjoy doing, not just working hard and no reward.

I have to agree with everything that has been said on this board. I have been a nurse for 2 years with a number of certifications to add to my degree. I get paid squat compared to other professions. I have two people in my Sunday school class who are going to start their high school teaching careers in the fall. One of them is going to be starting at $31,000 per year with full medical, dental, vision, and retirement benefits. The other one is working at a different high school. She is going to be paid $29,500 plus benefits for her first year. Within 5 years they both will be making over $40, 000 a year. If I remain in my current hospital, my salary will max out at $29,000 a year. The area I live in does have a low cost of living. I think it just makes me mad that other professions are getting paid huge amounts of money and they have a lot better benefits, including better time off, than what I do. I have people's lives in my hands on a daily basis. I wonder if the public realizes that their lives are worth less than $2.00/ hr( depends on nurse/patient ratio) when they are inpatients in a hospital.

Thank you for replying. At least it's good to know that I am not crazy. Here in Miami, Fl everytime I make a negative comment about nursing, other nurses look at me like I'm nuts. At least I know I'm not alone. I am not staying

in nursing, because I am getting to realize that I have been brainwashed. In the past, everyone made sound as though nurses made very good money. Instead I feel like a flunkie; and I get disrespected everytime. And I'm still poor. I have been misled. I consider myself a good nurse; but can I pay all my debts with this?

You are right, the public has not realized that their lives are worth less than $2.00/hr. And the administrators don't care about how many patients we get stuck with. They really don't care how much work we have piled on us. Then the quality of patient care is poor, because nurses are constantly bombarded with all kinds of paper work. We don't have time to care for our patients and it's not fair. The patients always suffer. :uhoh3: :uhoh3: :uhoh3:

Nursing is portrayed as a nice profession, until you walk inside the hospital. I'm telling you, we have been brainwashed. :uhoh3: :uhoh3: :uhoh3: :uhoh3: :uhoh3: :uhoh3:

That's sad that the teachers are getting better benefits than nurses. Not to say that teachers don't deserve it. But we should get this also. We work hard! :crying2: :crying2: :crying2: :crying2: :crying2:

I've definitely have learned from this forum.

Well, according to what I have read, only U.S. citizens with taxable income are those engaged in certain types of foreign and international commerce. In other words, taxable sources of income are limited to the following types of commerce:

1) certain foreign income of U.S. citizens

2) the domestic income of foreigners

3) certain income related to federal posessions.

But of course, I'm not an accountant. I suggest you contact an accountant. But just in case you didn't know, income tax is illegal. :chair: :sofahider

I agree that Nursing is not paid for the knowledge and risk they tackle daily.

It is not so much when you start nursing, as you start out pretty well, but when you have 30 years in the field, BSN, and Certifications you should not be paid 40K.

This is absurd!! No wonder there are no mentors, and nurses are not sticking around. We are paid as blue collar workers, and nothing more.

Now we are recruiting from the Phillipines and Ireland and Canada. I love Nursing and have always been an advocate, but I am tired of the same old stories, and no money, and no help, and on and on.

I can't believe that after a BSN, certifications, and all that experience, that you only make 40k. That' absurd!!! :nono:

It sad to hear that after a long years of studying to become a BSN the salary is not enough . my SIL and my friend are earning over 100k a year in california but look out the standand of living here , it's so expensive here. median price of a condo is over 500k 2 bd/2ba that's only a condo and they are about 30 years old or more . you may be living in a state where the salary of a nurses is 40k but the standard of living can support a family.

I believe in speaking up for what's right. And one of the biggest problems for me is that when I say something, every body looks at me as the trouble-maker or whistle blower. No one likes me for opening my mouth and saying what is true.

There should be a pay increase for nurses. I'm all for it, but we need cooperation from every single nurse in this country.

:angryfire Good news there are several states and national bills which will require nurse staffing or posting the nurse client ratio. In congress there are bills which protect both the patinet and the nurse for reporting the hospital for not following the guidelines. :balloons:

I always think about what a fair wage would be. The ballpark figure where I would be thrilled to go into work with the present conditions (short staffing, resposibility, liability) would be $70.00/hr. I think that would be fair.

...I'll keep on dreamin'... :D
