Nursing requirements for military

Published

I am starting my BSN program in the fall at the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore. Joining the military as an RN has crossed my mind many times since I decide to choose this career. I have spoken to an army recruiter and he seemed to know almost nothing about nursing. I was wondering do you need to take the ASVAB to be commissioned as a military RN (any branch) or any other qualification test? I know a couple of people in the military and they said they thought that the ASVAB was only for people who were going enlisted. Can anyone help me and also let me know of any experience they had?

Thanks

Joe

First of all Joe -- STOP speaking to the regular Army recruiters!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have their enlisted numbers to fill and will say just about anything to get you to sign on the dotted line. Once you sign, you will find yourself in a world of hurt :crying2: since your education will have to be placed on hold.

Since you have already been accepted at the University of Maryland -- you have it made in the shade lolololol They have a ROTC BN there. Contact them and you will be surprised as to what they have to offer you :nuke: There are scholarship $$$$'s plus special summer programs for ROTC nursing students (working in hospitals stateside and in Europe).

If you are sort of on the fence -- not knowing if you do or don't want to take the big step into the military -- you can enroll in ROTC for your first 2 yrs under no obligation (other than attending classes) as long as you don't contract and take scholarship $$$.

Good luck :wink2:

As stated about those are things you need to do. Only use the local recruiters to help find out the contact info for the healthcare recruiters. As for the ASVAB you do not have to take it since you will have a 4 year degree. Also speak with the recruiters from all 3 services (Navy, Army, AF) to ensure that you pick the best fit for you.
