Nursing Program at Jeff State

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all,

I am currently in the National Guard and work full-time. I am waiting on a promotion that I have earned but they claim that they have no slots. I am interested in started a new career because I am honestly unsatisfied with my job, and I want a job that is versatile where I can constantly learn new things that interest me and help others using what I have learned and my skills. I am looking for a career that is rewarding financially, personally, and mentally. I am interested in the part time nursing program at Jeff State because it is not a long commute and I have heard good things about their program. If you are currently in the Nursing program at Jefferson State, please give me your experience and thoughts on the Program. What is the work load usually like? Do you feel like they are preparing you to pass the NCLEX? :)

According to this: http://www.bestnursingdegree.com/programs/associate-degree-nursing/alabama/

The NCLEX pass rate at Jeff State for 2009 was 90.3%. Seems pretty good.

I am not in the program yet but am planning to apply to start Fall 2011. I am currently taking A&P 2 and Mth 100 at Jeff State (pre-reqs for nursing). I haven't decided if I am going to apply for the full-time or the part-time program. At first I thought I would have to do the part-time because I have to work full-time, but that puts me graduating school SOOO much later, so I am trying to decide now if I can manage the full-time program. The time difference in graduating is like 2 years.

I am currently deployed in Afghanistan. I will be back home at the end of October. I already have a degree so I have some prerequisites. I sent in my transcripts and submitted my application. I plan on talking to a nursing advisor to find out what other prereqs I need to take and how long should it take me to get through the program. I hope that I can be finished with the nursing program itself in at the most 2 1/2 years. Do you think that it is possible in the part-time program?

I don't think you could get through the part-time program in 2.5 years. I think the part-time program is 7 semesters, no summers, so that would be more like 3.5 years. I could be wrong on that, but I think that's what it would be. Pre-reqs for the program are A&P 1, A&P 2, Microbiology, Mth 100 and English 101. Also you have to take the Compass Reading test and the TEAS test. The full-time program is 5 semesters with summers (I think), so you could get through it a lot faster. So like if you started Fall 2011 for instance, I think you would finish Spring 2013. If you started the part-time program in Fall 2011, graduation would be like Fall 2014. Definitely verify all that with an advisor though.

Thanks for serving our country!

I am in the part-time program at Jeff state and yes it is 7 semesters but it does include summer. So instead of finishing in May of 2012 like the full time program we will be finish with program in December of 2012.

Oh seriously? I didn't realize you guys went summers too. An advisor told me it was just fall and spring. It wasn't an actual nursing advisor though. That's great - that definitely speeds it up.

Yes it does!! I thought the same but I asked the question during our orienation and she said we will go all year round and the only breaks we get are any holidays that Jeff state observes.

Thanks April. It must be tons of information to remember. How often do you have a test? What is your schedule like?

Yeah it is a lot of info to remember. We go two nights a week Monday and Wednesday 5:30-8:30. First semester you take Health assessment and pharmacology. The testing schedule isn't so bad in pharm we started off learning dose calculations and had a test every week the first three weeks but we only have 2-3 tests per month. I love the part-time program it's more flexible, but having to learn so much information and learn how to think critically is a bit challenging and stressful you have to put in a great deal of study time.
