Nursing Program at Hunter College NLN Score

U.S.A. New York

Published

hey everyone! I'm currently a student at hunter college and am applying for the nursing program for Fall 2010. I am taking the NLN tomorrow and am very nervous! I know the test is computer based and you can get your score as soon as your finished taking the test. I know there have been NLN exams going on since Monday. I was wondering if people wanted to share their scores (totally anonymous) just so we can get idea of what the high-low scores are. I hope everyone did well and I hope to see you in the program this fall!:nurse:

hey annag425

i got 142 for my composite score

buh i went to ask mandosa (dunno how to spell her name lol), i asked her during the fall semester and she said the average is 140, then this semester, i asked her is the average 140/160 or 140/200 and she told me it was 140/160.

My other friend went to ask her the same question, and she said the same thing, 140/160.

They look at your verbal, math and science score and add them together.

So math (40) + verbal (60) + science (60) will be a total of 160 if you get all the questions right :'( i only got 129/160 (this is the raw score). That's why i'm scared :/

hi,

i took the test last Friday.

my composite score is 152.

DI:99 AD:99 All:99

i think my nln score is ok..

but i'm so worried about my gpa...

i think it's only about 3.2...3.3...or 3.4

do you think i could get into the nursing program?

the verbal was really hard...

i got 15 mistakes and i think they were mostly from

the reading comprehension...

i almost fell asleep on that part of the exam...

good thing the nln is done...

all we have to do is wait...

i talked to the advisor and she told me that the results are out around April....

btw, they take out all the +/- in our grades...

so if you got a B+ in a class they consider it as a B...

if you got an A-, good for you... they take it as an A...

My heart really goes out to all of you running the "pre-nursing" race! All I can say is,you poor things, but keep the faith and don't loose sight of your goals!

Don't know what has happened with CUNY nursing programs, I mean with all this new requirements for various tests, SATs, NLN, and so forth. When I attened the College of Staten Island's program, it was like the others in the system. All one had to do was complete the pre-nursing sequence with a GPA at or above the magic number, usually 2.5. Depending upon the number of applicants and their GPA's, one may or may not have been admitted with say only a 2.8, but know plenty that did.

Can only guess that CUNY nursing programs have gone the way of most others and are now keenly aware of their board passing rate, and seek to "cull the herd" of any potential weak students before they even get in the door.

There is a study (have it bookmarked somewhere), that links NLN and TEAS scores with grades in nursing programs and finally NCLEX passing rates (on first attempt). The up shot is that, (according to the study), those whom do well on assessment exams are likely to do well in NPs and by extension the boards.

CUNY nursing programs are in a unique situation in that all graduates of NYC high schools are automatically granted a spot in the City University system. One's high school GPA determines if one attends one of the four year colleges, or must go to a community college.

Since the nursing department does not have direct control over science, math and other non-nursing classes, they cannot always be sure of the quality of say an "A" in English 101, and so forth, therefore an objective testing method is employed.

thanks for your insight Dogoodthengo!

Alpha1989 your score is amazing! Don't even worry about your gpa. last year i knew a girl that scored the same amount and her gpa was a 3.1 and she got in no problems. I'm worried for the rest of us! Are a lot of people scoring in the high 140s, 150s? I really hope they let us know soon this waiting sucks =(

and news on how other people did?

You're welcome! However please don't take my personal theories for anymore than just that. However something must have gone on for all CUNY nursing programs (includingmy old school "The College of Staten Island" to add NLN-PAX exams to the pre-nursing sequence for admission into the nursing program. Again, this is a recent development, for can tell you that CSI had so such requirement a few years ago when I was nosing aroud their website.

In my day it was mainly the priviate nursing programs (St. Vincent's, Long Island College Hospital, etc) that required the NLN as part of the admission process. This made sense then as now since diploma/hospital based ADN programs start students as official student nurses from day one. With no pre-nursing sequence to base things on, such programs are left with high school and perhaps other course work taken, and not much else.

Consider this as well, it is only recently and perhaps due to all the media hype regarding a "nursing shortage" that has caused a huge spike in applicants for nursing programs. However from about the 1980's through much of the 1990's nursing was not a popular major, CUNY schools and otherwise. One CUNY program (City College), even closed down it's nursing school.

If the applicant pool is low, and say there are 100 seats for an incoming class, it is quite possible that even students meeting the bare minimum GPA (IIRC, 2.5 for most CUNY programs),in the pre-nursing sequence will get a seat. While great for the student, if said student struggles with course work and or fails the boards, it brings the nursing program's overall pass rate down. Once a school's pass rate dips below the high 80% mark (or maybe low 90%, not sure of the number), whatever body accredits them gets nervous. If it goes on for several classes of graduate nurses, a nursing program can be put on warning and perhaps have their accredit status withdrawn.

i know someone who scored a 152, and another in the higher 140s

there is also someone who got a higher 130....

maybe the average is in the range of 130s...

i'm not really sure...

if our nln scores are in the same range then the gpa is really a big factor....

i scored a 150 as my composite score (which i was really suprised about) and my gpa is about a 3.5. it says that my score is at the 99th percentile which means, depending on the number of people who applied this year, only a few got around the same score so i think scores of 130s are pretty good and if you have a good gpa you definetly have a chance so dont worry! and they weigh gpa as equally as nln if its 50/50 so getting all As was not a waste of time at all, it might be what gets you in!! i guess now we just wait and seee...good luck everyone!:)

Anything above 150 NLN score is consider to be very competitive. Alpha 1989, how do you get 15 wrong and still got 150 score, that doesn't sound right... and did Hunter send you adjusted GPA back? 3.1-3.4 is a big difference... And all you ppl need to go bother Sobel... lol

yes, i got 15 mistakes in the verbal section...

i got 45 out of 60 in verbal

38 out of 40 in math

and 57 out of 60 in science...

i think my scores in the math and science sections

pulled up my composite score...

Hi there,

Does anyone know how Hunter readjusts the GPA?

Thanks.

I am not a Hunter student but have read your posts with interest. All you guys have great NLN scores! :) I was wondering if you can tell me how you prepared for the exam (study guide?), and whether you got these scores the first time you took the exam. If you took it more than once, how many times did you take it?

Does your school rank based on "Composite Score" or the Composite Percentile Score? My school could care less about the composite score; they first look at the "All" composite percentile score and then the "All" in the verbal percentile score.

I appreciate your input.....and good luck to all of you!!!
