U.S.A. New York

hey everyone! I'm currently a student at hunter college and am applying for the nursing program for Fall 2010. I am taking the NLN tomorrow and am very nervous! I know the test is computer based and you can get your score as soon as your finished taking the test. I know there have been NLN exams going on since Monday. I was wondering if people wanted to share their scores (totally anonymous) just so we can get idea of what the high-low scores are. I hope everyone did well and I hope to see you in the program this fall!:nurse:

haha, that was so simple. how embarrassing :p thank you so much for your help!!

hey everyone! ok so i just saw the email that the pharm professor sent. I'm so happy she posted the book we need but I can't seem to find it! I found the 5th edition book online but the ISBN number is not matching! anyone else having trouble? i want to buy this book asap!

My heart really goes out to all of you running the "pre-nursing" race! All I can say is,you poor things, but keep the faith and don't loose sight of your goals!

Don't know what has happened with CUNY nursing programs, I mean with all this new requirements for various tests, SATs, NLN, and so forth. When I attened the College of Staten Island's program, it was like the others in the system. All one had to do was complete the pre-nursing sequence with a GPA at or above the magic number, usually 2.5. Depending upon the number of applicants and their GPA's, one may or may not have been admitted with say only a 2.8, but know plenty that did.

Can only guess that CUNY nursing programs have gone the way of most others and are now keenly aware of their board passing rate, and seek to "cull the herd" of any potential weak students before they even get in the door.

There is a study (have it bookmarked somewhere), that links NLN and TEAS scores with grades in nursing programs and finally NCLEX passing rates (on first attempt). The up shot is that, (according to the study), those whom do well on assessment exams are likely to do well in NPs and by extension the boards.

CUNY nursing programs are in a unique situation in that all graduates of NYC high schools are automatically granted a spot in the City University system. One's high school GPA determines if one attends one of the four year colleges, or must go to a community college.

Since the nursing department does not have direct control over science, math and other non-nursing classes, they cannot always be sure of the quality of say an "A" in English 101, and so forth, therefore an objective testing method is employed.

I diasgree.I know plenty of schools that admit students with a 3.0 GPA.Hunter is competitive because seats are limited. There aren't enough Nursing instructors. There is nothing weak about a student, like myself, with a 3.55. GPA.

CUNY has such high standards for one reason and one reason only, Nursing is a HOT profession at the moment and compared with ALL current NYC nursing programs, they have hundreds and thousands of students trying to get in for the cheap tuition that could be paid completely by TAP and PELL. That's the only reason I was going to go to a CUNY college. After the competition was so fierce for about 70 seats, I went to a private university where I now have loans. My private university accepts students with a GPA of 2.8 or more and we still had to take the HESI A2 for admission and the science portions weren't even counted. Our nursing classes have been open for registration since March and they still aren't full, because most students can't afford the tuition and would rather shoot or the 3.7 if it means no loans or minimal loans after graduation.

Most people that apply for CUNY nursing programs now know how difficult and competitive it is and opt to go that route then to pay the money to get in some cases a guaranteed seat in a private university nursing program.

Hey everyone! I wanted to know if anyone took the CPR class that we need to take? I was looking up the CPR classes and wanted to confirm that it was a BLS for healthcare providers is what we needed? Also does it matter who certifies us? Thanks!

annag425,

You are correct, BLS for healthcare professionals is what we need. I don't think it matters who certifies you...I suggest American Heart Association or Red Cross.
