Nursing Prerequisites- Help!

Actually, if you want to start to just get a general overview of the subjects, you just should go to YouTube & look up: Crash Course Anatomy & Physiology & Crash Course Microbiology. These "courses" have playlists of videos & each video is anywhere between 7-13 minutes long. They're informative & entertaining. When I was taking the prerequisites, I would always refer to these videos to get an overview and/or clarification on facts. These vids saved my butt many a time.

I agree with the above comment, crash course on you tube was an amazing resource for me during A&P!

Otherwise the flash cards are amazing to learn muscles, bones, etc. I also used the following website As a resource for practice quizzes Etc.

also check your school canvas site, it’s possible there are posted lectures you can access from professors that teach online and hybrid classes.

For physiology, you’ll learn them by body system, in depth on a chemical level. Some of the more in depth and complex systems were: endocrine, nervous, renal/urinary, digestive, and immune. You’ll cover all the systems, but these are the ones I’d like to have more time with if given the chance.

micro overall is pretty intense but the biggest overall topics are cellular respiration and genetics (dna synthesis) which actually does overlap with physio a bit but goes more in depth and includes prokarya, where in physio you’ll only study eukarya.

In anatomy, the muscles were the most difficult for me, especially having to know origin, insertion, and action of each muscle. luckily, there are no concepts to master, it’s just rote memorization.

Anyways, good luck!! if you’re taking these classes one at a time you should be able to get As in all as long as you remember: repetition is the key.

If you can, try to access the syllabi for the courses from the school you're attending. At the school where I took my pre-requisites, these courses are very standardized regardless of which professor you get. This helped me make more sense of things/develop an order with which to attack things, especially with A&P. Memorizing parts is one thing, but what can often take a lot more study is understanding processes (e.g. protein synthesis, muscle contraction, etc). As someone else mentioned, those Crash Course videos are awesome for that stuff because they make it into a fun/cute story.

Taking my pre-requisites was the first time I'd been back at college in 20 yrs (and first time taking real science courses). I'm not sure if there could've been a way to "prepare", but the biggest thing I've had to learn along the way is how to effectively study this stuff. Like for me, groups tend to overwhelm me but drawing things out/making charts and visuals helps a ton. Getting a handle on what techniques will help you master the material (and avoiding wasting your time) will help a ton as well.

Good luck! The past 2 years have felt like forever getting through these courses, but I managed all As (knock on wood with final grades to come) and am finishing up nursing school apps now.

Hey there ! Just a helpful heads up, it is also extremely helpful here in San Diego to acquire your CNA license if you don’t already have it. It is an extra 5 points on most of the community college point scales , except for Southwestern where it weighs 25 points.
