Nursing MDC 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

First semester cost for those other future students that are wondering what the cost is.... it's about $1500.

They require you to buy a bag with several kits you'll need for nursing. Its about $128.

Also, this is the same as other schools I've visited, however, for those of you that are curious.... failing 2 classes will get you out of the program. Also, if you fail one class you have to skip the next semester and ONLY take that 1 class and PASS in order to continue the program.

On registration day, they open at 8am. People were waiting there since 7am in line to ensure they got the classes they wanted (sequence 1 or 2). Make sure you get there early. Some people actually were able to register online, and some were not. I've seen some inquiries about what sequence 1 and 2 are. They give the left side of the room in orientation with one color paper (sequence 1) and the other side with another color paper (sequence 2). The sequences are different teachers and different times. Sequence 1 you get Thursday off (for now) and Sequence 2 I wasn't able to see. Its so that you have some choices of teachers and some options with times but regardless of which one you choose the schedule never overlaps.

The cost of the books is about $250.

Take Micro Lab AND Psychology before the start of the program. They have a Baptist Scholarship that requires these classes.

I made the mistake of not taking the classes since I didn't know about this program. Don't make the same mistake.

When you graduate, if you pass NCLEX within 6 months MDC (for now) will reimburse you $200! That's awesome encouragement

Oh! And try to keep your books because before you graduate (make sure to apply for graduation before your last semester starts or you won't be able to graduate regardless of passing your classes) you are required to take the HESI. It's basically confirming that you learned something before they release you. You need to pass it to graduate. If you give up your book you can't review

Also, starting Jan 2018 they will be breaking ground at the parking across the street to build a large parking garage for us! YEY! The bad this is that we don't know when it will be finished. I've decided to take the Metro Rail instead. There are three exits. Santa Clara you need to walk like 2 blocks. The Civic Center you'll need to walk through Jackson Memorial Hospital. CULMER exit is the way to go. Apparently, MDC has a trolley that takes you to MDC !!! The monthly student pass that is available at the bookstore is about $60. Parking if you will be parking at the station near your house is about $12.

They use pink scantrons. Sold at the bookstore for about $1.50 for. Make sure NOT to write your name on all of them. The professors asked that we not write our names on them.

Get your I.D at the medical campus. They give you a bonus thick hard plastic name tag that other campuses do not give. I learned this the hard way :(. But if you are a prior student, but your cover for about $2 at the bookstore. It's worth getting. It's very durable.

You don't need white shoes for school. Just use regular sneakers. You need white shoes for CLINICALS! You can wear a sweater in class but not in CLINICALS so use one of those Under Armor (white plain) shirts under your white clinical shirt.

Don't wait for the Fundamentals professor or any professor for that matter, to email you the syllabus until 2-3 days prior to the first day of school. Remember, they are on vacation too and everyone deserves a break! For Fundamentals, read chapters 1-7. For Pharmacology the syllabus said to read the first 3 chapters.

Don't forget to show a paid receipt of your schedule to get your Parking Decal. Take your ID and car registration too! Also, if you are on a payment plan, they will make you log in to your phone and show that you have a HOLD on your account for pmt Nelnet plan in order to get your tag.

Uniforms at Blue Angels are affordable. I bought mine at the bookstore, however, because the ones at Blue Angels (across from MDC) had a different shade of green on their bottoms than their top. I wasn't too fond of the look but it appears that there were quite a few students that purchased their uniforms there since you see them walking the halls with mismatched scrubs

I hope this helps everyone that is nervous and searching for answers. I wanted to pass the information along Good Luck everyone.

IN your third semester you'' have 6 weeks of OBGYN, the after 6 weeks of Pscy, and after 6 week of Peds. The other sequence has Peds first, OBGYN second and Psych last.

You'll also have a 1 credit class named Community Health. You have like 5 or 6 classes you are required to go to. They have visitors and sometimes the professors give a speech about an important subject in the community. You are required 19 hours of community service which the professor will provide a list of the events you can sign up for. It can be a book fair they are having, clean a room in the school, donate bags of toiletries (full size) in a bag that they give you a list, a walk in the community, a health fair, etc. Out of every event you go to you are required to write a short essay answering these questions:

1.What did I do? This was a lecture

2.What did I learn from this activity? I learned that

3.How can I use this activity in the future?

4.How did this activity help me meet Healthy People 2020 goals, community health nursing, maternity, and pediatric objectives?

So make sure you do them as you go because you may forget the subjects.

You also need to do 10 hours of "Reflection Hours". I have not had a reflection hour yet but I've heard it has to do about talking about your experience and what you've done in the community to help.

How are the reflection hours conducted? Are they group or one on one?

Also, I cannot wait to do OB/GYN clinicals. I have a feeling it will be my favorite.

The reflection hours are conducted in a group. So it isn't too bad :)

They give you sheets that you have to get your professors to sign to confirm you completed your reflection hours. I just made sure to take a picture of the sign in sheet or take a picture of myself with the powerpoint in the background just in case. I like to be thorough.

OBGYN!!!!! Take Tomlinson for your clinical professor!!!!! Her students at Jackson had the most experience. I did not have the best experience at the hospital and with the clinical professor I had. She was nice though but to get the most out of your OBGYN experience take Tomlinson for CLINICALS. Both Tomlinson and Nitti are fabulous professors. By the way....good luck getting into Tomlinsons clinical. She is the one everyone tries to get.

Tomlinson, got it! I will remember.

I didn't. With nursing school having so much additional resources is just for decoration! There is hardly anytime to study. You'll want to do your own notes and own blueprint because you are unsure what YOUR test will have. I have the SimpleNursing membership which isn't bad but as a quick explanation but they don't have everything and the PHARM is something you'll need to teach yourself. From experience, simple nursing was ok b/c they are short videos and help you understand a little better.

There are some free on YouTube but any additional ones are for a charge on their website. You can do it without simple nursing. It's not a life saver and there's are a whole bunch of videos on YouTube that offer he same or even better info. Just FYI ;)

Found this and it has been soooo helpful! When you are taking nursing tests, they are different than any other tests I have ever taken.

1. Cover the options.

2. Read the question.

3. Determine if the style of the question is positive or negative.

4. Identify the key words in the question.

5. Ask yourself, "What is really being asked in this question?"

6. Rephrase the question in your own words and answer it.

7. Uncover the options and look for one that matches your own answer.

8. Review the other options and rule out any options that are clearly incorrect.

9. Consider the options that are left based on nursing principles and your knowledge of the subject.

10. Make your selection.

By the way...remember that Select all that apply questions can be 1 answer or ALL of them! Ive seen it! Many times already

How to remember the types and number of Vertebrae in Spine?

Found online:

How can I remember that there are 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebrae, 5 lumbar vertebrae.

Answer: It’s easy as just remembering the ideal meal timings:

Breakfast at 7:00 am

Lunch at 12

Dinner at 5:00 pm

Now to remember the type names :

7- Cervical — I usually have cereals for breakfast

12 — Thoracic — We have the breakfast and dinner connection covered so this the only one left. Hence not new connection required

5 — Lumbar — I slumber in bed after dinner

The first test of Advanced Med Surg, a document was given to us to register for our pinning and leadership. Which of course if we dont pass Adv Med Sure we will not get too. Study hard for this class. It is super intense.

Make sure you apply at the advisors office in the beginning of your last semester for graduation. There is no charge to apply for graduation.

I ALWAYS forget the hemoglobin levels sooooo. I started to think of ways to remember. So here we go..... the Male Goblin level is 14-18 (male has 4 letters —>14 and we know each range is 4 digits apart so 14-18 because men are like horses only looking one way LOL!!! ;) )

For a Female Goblin (female has 6 letters but with females we look back (12) 4 digits then forwards to make good decisions so 14-16)
