Nursing and keeping fit??

Published

Hello all.

I am starting university in september woohoo cant wait, I know i have to do shift work as part of my training and future carreer. however i am also an extremely keen runner and currently running about 12 miles a day five days a week.

So for the runners out there when is it best to do my run, before or after my shift?

Also i am 6'2 and weigh about 16 stone, I follow quite a stringent diet plan so is breaks / lunch fixed or are they fluid when times are not busy. Also do you eat a large meal before your shift. Sorry to ask but i have been training for years to get into good shape and wondered what you all do???

Hello there! Well, I don't know how people do it with a nursing job, but as a busy pre-nursing student/full time worker I run or do other workouts whenever I can fit it in. It's a priority to me, so I do plan ahead, but have a plan B (and C and D!) just in case.

Meal-wise, I've heard a lot of nurses have to delay meals. Maybe some nutritional supplements, like protein bars, would help if you are trying to time your meals in certain intervals?

I too am huge on fitness. I work out in the gym five nights a week and bike, rollerblade or walk outside during the summer and on the machines in the winter. I am worried about how I will be able to fit it into my school schedule next year. It is only maintenance so hopefully I'll be able to find time to do a little here and there. I always keep trail mix and good power foods with me for a quick pick me up and to keep metabolism moving.

Good luck keeping healthy and fit...healthy body=sharp mind!!

My advice to you if you're going to start running is not to run on an empty stomach. A lot of people say that it's better that way, but most research proves otherwise. So don't run on an empty stomach.

I'm pretty big on fitness too so that's a big issue with me.. ;)

I agree, a complete empty stomach is not good...eat a little fruit (oranges are perfect)

I am big into fitness, too. wouldn't be able to do what I am doing on a daily basis at my "old" age without it :lol2:

My plan is to bike to school. It's going to be about a 22 mile round trip. That should at least keep me at my current level.
