What is your protocol for blood transfusions? Does anyone still pre-medicate patients with Tylenol and/or Benadryl?

If the patient has blood transfusions on a regular basis(ie: cancer/leukemia pt.) we routinely premedicate with Tylenol and Benedryl. We also use leukocyte filters on these patients.

We give blood on a regular basis and never pre-med unless the patient has a known hx of transfusion reaction. We use benadryl and solumedrol. In 3 years, I've only had to premedicate one time!!! :)

Unless the patient has had repetitive transfusions then we do not premedicate. We also use leukocyte reduction filters.

We pre-medicate if the doctor orders it. Have done it both ways.:)
