So in general as far as prioritizing nursing interventions, would you say monitoring patients for a specific complication or educating the patients family about preventative measures to take that would avoid worsening the patients condition would take priority? Basically it's either monitoring or education. I personally would be inclined to think monitoring would be the best nursing intervention, but I could be wrong. What's your take?

The nursing process simply put is to Assess, Do, and Teach.
Monitoring your patient is another way of saying "assess." Therefore, you are correct in thinking that monitoring your patient comes before educating.

Visualize Mazlow's hierarchy. Priority lessens as you go up the triangle. The patient's improved knowledge isn't worth much if her vital functions go kaput.
