Nursing homes vs. assisted living.

Published

I'm a new CNA student as of this week. I have not had the chance to ask this question. What's the difference between nursing homes and assisted living facilities as far as who mandates them and would a person who needs skilled nursing be allowed to stay in an assisted living facility if they were totally bed confined, had contractures and had to be moved by two people, has to be fed by staff? The reason I'm asking, you don't have to be a CNA to work in an assisted living facility but one that I intereviewed with said that they have six residents that are totally bed confined and can't be left alone. Would this be acceptable for assisted living and would you not need a CNA to handle this type of resident? Would they not belong in a skilled nursing facility or is skilled nursing for someone who has to be monitored by a nurse? This is all confusing to me by what I was advised on this job interview. I also been advised that a nurse has to be in the facility or on call and within close range of the facility. I'm just confused. bb

I am in an Assisted Living where we do take some of the heavy care residents, but we are staffed with all CNA/HHAs and an LPN in building around the clock, RN mon-fri 8-4 and on call the rest of the time. We have a unit for those residents that need more care where staffing is 1 to 5 and we also have a hoyer and an easy stand.

In my state most assisted livings I have ran into are staffed with home health aides and have a nurse at least on call at all hours.
