Nursing experience prior to nursing school

Hello all current and future nurses hope this finds you all well. I had a question that I was hoping some of you might be able to answer. Im a new male nursing student and I don't have any past experience. I was wondering how many out there started nursing school with no experience and what advise you can give to someone going in fresh. How did you get comfortable around patients for the first time? and what kid of things would you have done differently. Thanks again.!

Hi,

I am going into my second year and had zero nursing experience prior to this program. I have 19 years of patient experience in the dental field but it is completely different. I suggest getting a hospital job as a tech/aide. You will learn so much! I wish I had the time to do this when I began but unfortunately I work full time and attend a part time program.

Also, if your program has "open lab" go to every single one. The more you practice the more comfortable you will become. This eventually will all come with time. Good luck! :cat:

Thanks! I'm the same way. I have to work full time I really don't have any other way and going to school part time. If I get the time I would like to do what you said and work as an aid I just can't right now. I know there's a lot of people that go in fresh I just wanted to see what their perspective was. Thanks again! Ronny

They have weekend and per diem positions. Also, during the summer months when you aren't in school it might be a time where you can gain experience. There are many people in my class that went in fresh so you should be ok. =)

That is okay, you will learn in nursing school. I also did not have any experience when I started nursing school. During my second semester of nursing school I challenged the CNA exam and got my license. I worked in a LTC facility and although it was difficult, my patient care skills improved tremendously in nursing school. That position led me to a nursing assistant position in the PACU in a MA hospital. If you can I advise getting some nursing assistant experience while attending nursing school. It has helped me so much! Things made more sense for me as well when I was taking tests. Good luck!!

Thanks I appreciate the feed back! I'm hoping to be able to do some sort of nursing assistance work soon. Did you go to Laboure? I think saw some of your post about Laboure. That's were I'm going now.
