What are current salaries for new MSN graduates who want to teach in a hospital nursing school or community college program ?

Also how are part time clinical instructors paid ? Hourly ? Average wages ?

According to my colleagues, $60,000 annually but some hospitals will offer $50,000.

I don't know any educators in the hospital setting making as little as $50,000. Most educators I know of started at around $70,000 and went up depending on experience. I'm sure that area and size of hospital has a lot to do with those figures as well.

New update, our 22 yr. old LPN program closed in July. Couldn't hire faculty because of inadequate pay and the almost unbelieveable number of hours of unpaid required work time, so that we could increase the enrollment to make the budget. Vicious circle. And our local community college, with a 40,000 student enrollment has only 88 slots for their Sept. AAS RN program. Shameful, and nothing has changed, except now, their 'waiting list' has become a point system, based on GPA and the number of classes you take before you are even accepted into the nursing program. What nursing shortage? Lets just run with techs, and pretend med and tx errors and increased MRSA, from lack of nurses at the bedside and workloads humanly impossible to carry, are statistical anomalies.

What you need to keep in mind is that teaching is a wonderful way to keep your skills sharpened and up to date clinically. What I love about teaching??? When a student 'gets it'! Also the hours and snow days and summers off are pretty good too! Unfortunately, I don't know many nurses no matter what capacity they work in that can survive on just one paycheck,so they often have to pick up per diem shifts to somewhere to make ends meet.

Yes, I've always wondered why more nurses don't choose Staff Development careers. The pay is generally better than academia -- and you generally work more attractive schedules, too.

I work in a PN program at a technical college, I think our hours are quite attractive- off at 3 everyday, weekends off and 13 weeks off every year.

There will always be people that value the time off that academia offers. One issue is that time off does not equal more pay. For those of us that are the primary supports for our families, time off has little value compared to a larger salary.

Yes, I hear that people utilize some of their time off to work in other areas per diem to make up the money value. To me, this is counter-productive. As master's prepared nurses, we should not have to work overtime and per diem to make up our pay, especially when other disciplines in academia do not have to. You never see your math professor working at H&R Block to make up their salary. Also, to work over time and per diem negates the time off you get with your primary job.

The schedule is great as well as the reward of working with students, yes I still have teenagers at home and it is excellent to be off in the summer. Fortunately, we have a faculty union and I think my annual salary is decent-not awesome, excellent benefits and retirement, and I do not have to work during my time off to meet my annual expenses.

In fact, it is quite common for university professors to have 2nd jobs to support their families. Some are lucky enough to get part-time jobs teaching online classes for other schools. Some are able to earn money as consultants ... or as writers for magazines ... etc. ... other types of work that relate to their primary field of interest. However others do things like yard work, paing houses, waitress, work at theme parks, etc. during their "summer's off" to earn money.

I got this off the College Website. I was told the pay was based on load equivalent. 135 hours/15 weeks = 9 equivalent load, 1 load is added for meetings that will need to be attended to equal 10 load equivalent. Which ends up being $5210 for the semester working PT if starting out new working for that particular college. So if you divide $5210 by 135 hours it ends up being $38.59/hr. But in reality, one will be working more than 135 hours in a semester working PT.

Pay increases with teaching experience at the college. The chart below gives the current pay for many credit courses. One hour of class time per week equals one load equivalent. According to the chart, someone teaching a course with a three-load equivalent for the first time would receive $1,563, while someone teaching the course in the seventh semester would receive $2,166.
