You mean an EdD? I know one of the faculty at my institution got hers at Portland State University -- which, if you saw my post about rubrics, is where the authors of that book are.

Is that what you mean? or a PhD in Nursing with an educational focus? If that is your interest, I'd recommend my institution OHSU. They have a MNE, but you can take the ed courses as a PhD student, and Christine Tanner is there. I know there have been recent grads whose diss had to do with learning/education.

The following are the courses with an education focus:

NURS 561/661 Curriculum and Instruction in Nursing

3 credits

This course emphasizes best practices in adult learning emphasizing performance-based curriculum models and instructional design. How learning occurs in students in professional education programs is emphasized as a design consideration. Performance-based curriculum models are compared to other models in use in current nursing education programs. Th e format includes face-to-face intensives and online discussion and group work.

NURS 562/662 Assessment and Learning in Nursing

3 credits

This course has two foci. First, it introduces approaches, processes, and tools that can be used to assess adult learning, especially those that assess the student's ability to use his/her knowledge/skills in a practical situation. Second, it provides experience in planning constructivist, student-centered learning activities that are both engaging and eff ective in achieving desired student performance. Special topics include: design of performance assessment tasks, development of instructional rubrics to aid student learning, the use of portfolios, grading and reporting, and developing evidence for the achievement of nursing competencies.

NURS 563/663 Simulation in Nursing Education

3 credits

This course explores the complexities of implementing a simulation program, and how to integrate simulation into individualized courses and curriculum. Students will be introduced to, and learn how to utilize a variety of simulation tools and techniques to enhance nursing education. A combination of highly interactive learning activities and techniques-- including hands-on activities--will be used to develop individual competency in the understanding of simulation education as a teaching tool in nursing. Students will have the opportunity to experience and participate in realistic (high fi delity) simulation. Scenario development strategies and techniques will be introduced. Emphasis will be placed on simulations that include clinical judgment, teamwork, and interdisciplinary communication and resource management. Students will also learn concepts and skills associated with debriefi ng. Th e format will be twoday intensives with online discussion, hands-on simulation, and readings.

NURS 564/664 Clinical Teaching

3 credits

Th is course examines a variety of clinical teaching models. It emphasizes the design of clinical learning experiences, drawing on studies of human learning, novice-expert development, clinical judgment, and clinical education. Students will be guided through the identifi cation of key competencies and relevant and predictable clinical learning opportunities in their practice settings. Issues in clinical education, staff -faculty and student faculty interactions and in the national movement for clinical education reform will be explored.

NURS 565/665 Best Practices in Teaching Nursing

1 credit

This course is an examination of recent research in college teaching, focusing on studies particularly relevant for classroom teaching in nursing education. Includes observation of expert teachers and analysis of their practices.

NURS 566/666 Nursing Faculty Roles and Responsibilities

1 credit

This course is an exploration of the multiple roles of nursing faculty in research, education and practice. Changes in academic life with the advent of the 21st century, responsibilities inherent in faculty positions in a professional discipline, and approaches to balancing demands for new faculty will be explored.

NURS 509AA/609AA Practicum in Teaching

1-3 credits

This course provides students with the opportunity to design, implement, and evaluate a variety of learning experiences appropriate to the course environment and outcomes expected of the designated learners. Opportunity to use several different teaching modalities will be provided, including classroom, seminar, clinical, laboratory and online.
