Staffing problems

Hello all,

I completed my first year as nurse faculty. I realize, however, that there is no security in this job. It is almost August and I still don't know what my course load will be next semester. Last semester I was full-time with benefits. I don't know if I will lose my benefits in Fall, or even get 2 courses to teach (half-time). Which means I will have to teach at 2 colleges or look for another job. This situation is stressing me out. I am not even thinking of tenure at this time, just the ability to be able to predict my annual income and whether I will be able to see the doctor next month. I hate this situation after all the effort I put in getting nowhere.

Unfortunately, that's what the status of adjunct faculty is in society today. If you like teaching, I recommend looking for a new job -- either at a school that will be able to provide you with an on-going contract for full time employment -- or perhaps at a clinical facility looking for a staff educator. Staff education (Nursing Professional Development) jobs can be quite attractive, offering more stability and higher pay than beginner-level school faculty jobs.

Don't be afraid to explore other options.

Thanks. But I was taken off adjunct status and given a full-time contract. There is a lot of rivalry between departments where each department tries to block others from cannibalizing instructors. In this way they ensure their staffing is taken care of. In the end it is the instructor who gets the short end. I don't want to keep switching jobs. If this does not pan out I will probably go into business.

I wish you luck and security - which after all everyone of us deserves. I'm pretty appalled that if a faculty member does a good job that they should have to worry about ongoing job security.

So almost 2 years into the job, and it is almost the same situation. I am full-time now, and have a contract but I am not sure what I am teaching till the semester begins. Guess how prepared I am? But I must admit, I am assured they will find a full load for me. I have, however, not developed expertise in any area as I have taught in 3 specialty areas already and counting.
