Nursing Class online! Help!

Please give me the heads up on taking nursing classes online, please! #pre-nursing

The heads up? Well, the first heads up is that VERY few nursing programs will accept your prereqs if you take them online, as they generally have a lab element. Next, no nursing program is online, unless it's RN-BSN. You will have to bite the bullet and take classes in-person if you want to be a nurse.

@RunBabyRun Thanks for info

That's not true. There are nursing classes online. The clinical component cannot be done on line, but there are nursing programs that have their classes online. There are also programs that do take online classes for their prereqs as well. I took microbiology online with a lab component. I had to purchase a microscope and supplies for the class, as well as a camera that hooked up to the microscope to submit pictures as proof of my labwork. I had taken microbiology in a traditional school, but the time limit for transfer expired. I learned a lot more in the online class and actually had fun doing it.

I am in a hybrid program with the theory online and clinical in person. There aren't that many programs out there with that model though, but they do exist.

What exactly are you needing help with as far as online classes? I'm not really sure what you are asking for help with.

I noticed you tagged this post Texas. If you life in Texas you might take a look at WGU's prelicensure program. It might be what you are looking for.

@tsm007 I just want to hear some experiences that nurses had with their online nursing classes and also want to know if it is doable with work, I guest I am a little afraid and think it might be to much for me to work and take the online courses, I want to atleast give it a try and sounds like you have had good experience which is what I like to hear so I can make a decision.

I agree with run, most schools will not accept online credits with classes that need labs. Yes, they do exist but I would be wary of it. Certain classes are meant to be in a classroom, that's just the way it is and there is a reason that most schools do not accept them. Simple as that. If you are doing prereqs, a lot of those can be done online such as psych, english, and math. I absolutely would not do A&P, micro, chemistry, anything with a lab online. As far as once you are in the nursing program, that needs to be done in a classroom also and then at a clinical site. You can transition from say a ADN to BSN online but that is pretty much it. WGU offers a ADN to BSN but at least in my state does not offer the others. There are good reasons for this. First you are learning to think differently and pass the NCLEX. These things need to be done in person and need to see an instructor face to face to understand the enormous amount of material that gets covered.

I am not saying programs completely online do not exist, I have never heard of them, but I would strongly caution against them. These are probably schools that just want your money and may not be accredited. They just want the money and not see you succeed. You will also probably pay a boatload of money for them also. Do you honestly want a nurse treating you that got their degree solely online? Not me, I want one that has been in a classroom and has learned from seasoned instructors how to take care of me.

I just checked out the link you sent, I will do some research.

Thanks!

@Heathermaizey Thanks for your comments! I have my pre-reqs and I agree I would never take science classes online.Tthe school explain that If I decide to take the online classes I would take the simulation and clinicals in the evening and weekends which will allow me to keep my job during the course

WGU students are having a very difficult time finding organizations that will agree to serve as clinical sites - just sayin'.
