Nurses, do you thank your CNA/PCA/Nursing Assistant daily?

Published

In the past six weeks, only two nurses have thanked me sincerely for doing a good job for them at the end of our shifts together. I stopped in my tracks and was so pleased and moved that I almost cried.

Do you thank your nursing assistant at the end of the day? If not, start now and watch the difference it makes. Look him or her right in the eye and mean it! Your assistant will go home that night feeling it was all worth it. She'll probably tell her husband and kids that she had a great day all because of your sincere gratitude.

CNA's are worth their weight in gold....i have learned so many techniques fom them. They are truely valueable to me. Thank them at least once per shift. I have been there and I know what its like - Was abused terribly when i was a CNA. Will never let that happen to the ones I work with.

Last time I was an inpatient I had a nurse and a preceptee (so 2 nurses for the usual load of 2 patients). They were doing EVERYTHING for me themselves. The nurse who had been a nurse for a while said "We are 2 people and have 2 patients the aids are only 1 person and have lots more then that we will do what we can to help them out" she was teaching her preceptee to respect the aids with that mindset which I like, along with a mind set of nothing (with in reason) is outside of the nurses scope as far as cleaning and that type of thing.

This was the day that the person incharge of the call light was not telling my nurse I needed to pee or anything, so I wet the bed a couple of times. They helped me clean myself up and changed my bed themsleves and did all my vitals and everything themselves, I never even saw the aid that shift.

I thank the ones that deserve thanking -- and may not thank those who seemed to sit a lot all night while I filled water pitchers and brought in sheets, blankets, boxes of tissues, etc.

We work as techs occasionally on our floors, and after I did that, I did appreciate THEIR JOB -- but when will they work mine and see exactly what I am responsible for?

They can go about their job and be very busy, and they have no earthly idea what you are doing, what you are thinking about, what your struggles and priorities are -- their job is routine. It's tough, as they have a lot to do -- but we have a lot to do also, and just need endless help.

Honestly, there are so many demands, I feel I need a personal tech for each patient!

Our hospital is in the midst of switching to a new model whereby one nurse will be teamed up with one tech. The nurse and his/her tech will have no more than five patients. I am SOOOO excited about this change! Can you imagine how much more efficient such a set up will be and how much happier patients, nurses and techs will be?!

You are absolutely right and they get to leave at the end of their shifts.
