Nurses are overpaid!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I collect antique medical items such as old metal syringes, books, diagnostic equipment, etc. I also collect very old medical journals.

I just won this auction on ebay. It's a medical journal from the late 1800's where a doc is apparently complaining that nurses made too much money.

Question for staff... since this medical journal is well over 100 years old can I post the contents when I receive it?

I just had to laugh, they've been complaining about this for over 100 years. You'd think they'd have a clue by now.

Assuming staff are okay with my posting the article (can't be copyright issues now, can there??) is anyone interested? If folks aren't interested I don't want to take the time to copy/type.

I also won another auction for a medical journal where it said that OB nurses were "stupid" and needed more training. Well, perhaps if they would have taught them more than how to make "oatmeal" while in school, they would have been better prepared to deliver babies!

Some docs just don't get a lot smarter with time.

I'd love to see this article. I work part time in a medical library and I never know what interesting things I'll find in the archives! :Melody:

Ohhhhh, I do believe I am jealous! I can't imagine the cool stuff you see!

someone mentioned earlier in the thread that they collect/enjoy old ob journals and books. the guy i bought my journals from had quite a few that didn't sell. he offered to let me go through them and pick out some more. i found this and thought you might be interested:

click here: ebay: 1855 obstetric lecture : digitalis for the uterus (item 7374593229 end time dec-18-05 19:01:30 pst)

the auction has ended but if you are interested in this ($9.99 i believe) i'm positive he'll sell it to you. tell him the lady with the lemons in arizona suggested you write to him. he's in canada and he is freezing in their winter temps. i've been teasing him via email about how it is in the upper 70's here and my lemon tree is about to fall over with all the lemons.

i have never purchased from this guy previous to these journals the other day however he has great feedback. so far he's been a gem and has agreed to all of my requests. (combining shipping, buying more stuff after the auctions already ended, etc.)

A Ha it might be yours!!!

I think I lived back in those days, and was a nurse, sounds wierd but true, I love all the old stuff also.. keep talking

You know, when I made the offer to buy anything that didn't sell I thought we were talking 10-15 items. Not quite. He made the mistake of listing this stuff so the auctions ended during holidays. Thankfully, he told me upfront I likely didn't realize just how much hasn't sold yet so he told me to pick what I want and we'll leave it at that.

Thank goodness, I'd be paying this stuff off over the next year! :coollook:

I did pick out a few more journals. I'm dreading hearing what the grand total will be.

I know EXACTLY what you mean! I do!

People talk about the new advances in medicine and how cool this drug is, or that treatment, or the new equipment. (YAWN)

Old stuff, THAT is cool! I know an ER doc on another forum and we compare stories about what he has vs. what I have. We realized that we may be bidding against one another on some items so we cut a deal. We tell the other what we are bidding on so we don't cause the other grief for huge bidding wars.

There are quite a few fun things on ebay now. Might want to check it out! Some of it (especially this time of year) are really great prices. People are not on line much during holiday weekends so you aren't bidding against everyone.

Gosh Bipley....thanks for all of this info...I will have to keep an eye out on ebay for now on! So far, the only vintage medical item I have is one of the old metal cabinets with glass windows found in doctors' offices. It is really small and found it at a junk shop. My husband collects old radios and we have various 1930s thru 1950s with the real wood casing, tubes, etc. :p

This reminds me of my neighbor, who is in her 90's. She lives in a home that was built in the 1800's and used to be owned by a doctor. His office was in the basement and most of his medical equipment was left in the basement when he died. My neighbor said when they moved in the house in the 1940's, they just chucked all the stuff in the basement. It all went to the dump.:o

So sad, bottles of medicine, glass syringes, etc.

Late 1800s.

I have one of the first glass syringes. 10cc syringe with a 14g 2.5" needle, not a luer lock needle, just attached.

What in the heck did THAT cure??

I bet the sight of it "cured" all the same things that the threat of castor oil cured!:chuckle

Weren't they a little full of themselves! :uhoh3: Those OB docs were pretty stupid in those days too! If I'm ever accidentally teleported back in time, leave me in the competant hands of a nurse or lay midwife, lock the doors, and keep those old MDs out! The things they did.:stone

Most of them are a little smarter :chuckle

It is SOOOO much fun to collect old antique medical stuff. I am a mega addict. I just looked at my ebay account and I owe $400.00 in old medical stuff! Can't let R see THAT bill! :nono:

It's FUN! Join the addiction! Collect this stuff!

That's just sad. That should be illegal, or at the very least a mega sin! Throwing away that kind of stuff... wow. Can you imagine what was in there?

One auction several months ago was an abortion kit. A guy buys a really old home, like 150 years old. He is in his basement and finds a cloth hidden in the rafters. He pulls it out and it was an abortion kit. Drugs were totally unknown to me. Sounded quite painful.
